Abandoned Places: old sugar factory/vieja fábrica de azúcar - Nerja, Andalucía
Today, known as Costa del Sol, it could have beencalled in other times as the Costa del Azúcar, the reason is none other than the production based on sugarcane that were important in other times in these Andalusian lands. The old San Joaquin factory is one of the main exponents.
Located in the Andalusian region of La Axarquía, in Malaga, it operated intermittently between the years 1880 and 1930. Sugar cane was introduced in these lands back in the ninth century, were times of Al-Andalus and it´s cultural miscegenation.
It was also an stage in La Desbandá, when many people fleeing from the ravages of the Spanish Civil War in February 1937 were trying to escape to Almería.
It is also worth noting that some people tell that some stranges facts are taking place here, even the Iker Jiménez´s Tv show (Cuarto Milenio) had this place as the setting for one of his reports.
Another that makes that place very interesting is the location, behind the Natural Park of Maro - Cerro Gordo. Here we can find some wild beaches, a place where even the goats go to lick the salt from rocks with the sunset. Something that can give you an amazing picture on a natural paradise, and is also one of the best places in Europe to snorkel.
- Where: between Nerja and Maro, in Málaga province (South Spain).
- What: and old factory very well preserved.
- When: any time is good to visit the area, but with good weather we can enjoy the coast natural park of Maro - Cerro Gordo.
