Climbing Roys Peak in Wanaka

in #travelfeed5 years ago

Such a special view, even we were not at the highest point!

Okay, to be honest, I have to relativize the heading that we climbed on Roy's Peak: Yes, we were there and climbed up the mountain, but we were not at the highest point, to be honest we were far away from it. Like many of the things we did in New Zealand, climbing Roys Peak was very spontaneous. In our accommodation, which was about 10 minutes away by car, our hosts recommended us to climb there. As roys peak is also considered one of the most famous sights of New Zealand on the internet, we naturally did not want to miss it. So we drove at around 12 o clock in the morning to Roys Peak. Next to the mountain there was a parking lot, which was very convenient. There we parked our rental car. We were not really prepared: we had no hiking shoes or hiking clothes on and unfortunately forgotten water. the clothes were less the problem, but water is essential in climbing roys peak! We had to learn that too. So we went up the mountain. The day was very warm and the time was responsible. It is not recommended to climb the mountain later than 12 o clock. This is because you need about 6 hours to get to the peak (which we first learned from others) and the descent takes about 4 hours.

In between (I have to admit my sister and I are sporty, but this refers more to swimming, we are in hiking not very good) we have always asked other people how far it is. After an hour's walk we were told it takes another 6 hours, after two hours it still lasts 6 hours. And we still had to expect the time for the descent. After much deliberation, we decided after two hours to not continue hiking. This was mainly because we had neither suncreme nor water. Also there were no shops or similar on the way, there was really only some sheeps and nature. We realized that we were not really fast and that we were able to get over even older people. But even after two hours hiking we had a great view. Even if it does not look like we needed another 6 hours to be completely on roys peak - we had really great photos, especially with the weather we had. It was a little sad that we did not continue hiking, but it comforted us a little that we were not the only ones who had previously reversed, there were some who decided after a few minutes or hours against the further hike.

If you are there once and you liek to hike more than my sister and me, I can still recommend it to anyone but at least to hike a piece. There is a wonderful view and you are mowed all the way from sheeps. But do not forget suncreme and, very important, water! If you liked my post, I'm looking forward to an upvote or a comment!
