Summer holidays in the north of Mallorca

My summer holiday is going to end soon. I’m already back in Germany and at the moment it’s pretty cold. But the memories are still alive, I look through the pictures and wish to return to the mountains.

The Serra de Tramuntana

Mallorca consists of six landscape zones, beginning with the Serra de Tramuntana, a mountain chain that runs parallel to the coast in the northwest of the island, with a total of 11 peaks over a thousand meters, the highest is the Puig Major at 1445 meters. Furthermore, there is Palma, capital of the island and seat of government of the Balearic Islands, Raiguer, Pla de Mallorca, Migjorn and Llevant, which after Palma is probably the most touristic. Here you can find the famous Cala Ratjada, well known for party tourism.
The coast of the Serra de Tramuntana consists in large parts of rocks, some steep coasts and many small bays. Port de Sollér is the largest of these bays and has got a shelter harbour with jetties for mainly small ships and boats.

The mountains in the Serra de Tramuntana cause more rainfall than in the rest of the island, which has created many fertile valleys where lemon and orange trees grow.

But the olive tree is omnipresent, partly several centuries old and robust against any drought, cultivated in the typical terraced way, which makes it possible to plant even steep hillsides.

Mallorca doesn’t have any natural lakes and rivers, apart from two large drinking water reservoirs and torrents (Torrentes), which discharge rainwater into the sea. The torrents are usually dry or swampy and provide habitat for a rich flora and fauna, but when it rains they are filled and can become quite impressive depending on the width. Sometimes they flow in a natural bed, sometimes led, I passed some of them and considered them to be natural brooks.
Considering the amount of water that flows here, one can well imagine why it is very green in the mountains despite the persistent heat.

The Serra de Tramuntana is still largely spared from mass tourism. There is still a lot of untouched nature and wild vegetation. In 2011, the region was even declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. In fact, wild vegetation was very well present, even on "marked hiking trails" the path was often difficult to spot, as it was overgrown with grass, over bare rocks or a fallen tree required a detour. Sometimes hiking became more of a climb, but it was worth every step.

However, clever hikers found a way to help each other. If the path is not sufficiently marked, you build a few stones (following the example of the Way of St. James) and you can see the path from a distance, at least the approximate location. Nevertheless I wouldn't advise anyone to do this without GPS, fortunately the mobile phone reception is very good everywhere and a proper Smartphone App is sufficient for navigation.

Wegkennzeichnung.jpg

These more difficult and also not completely harmless ways are anyhow worthwhile. It’s quite, since most of the hikers walk on well marked and developed paths. It's like a little adventure and offers some breathtaking views.

GR 221

GR 221

Sooner or later most of the hiking trails lead back to the GR 221 (Gran Recorregut 221), at least that was my impression. The hiking trail around Sollér is well developed and has a lot of markings and signs. It leads from Port d'Andratx in the east to Pollença in the west.
It has many foothills that lead to the surrounding villages and is therefore in no way limited to only one clearly defined route.
Also, the legal situation here in some parts does not seem to be clarified yet, as often private areas are crossed. It is not uncommon to walk between two fences that separate the path from the surrounding fields.

There are 53 municipalities in Mallorca and 13 of them are located in the Serra de Tramuntana.
Our hotel was in Port de Sollér in the municipality of Sollér, which is located quite centrally at the coast and was our starting point for various day hikes in different directions.

Port de Sollér is the port city of Sollér and probably also the place with the most tourists, which is not very surprising, as it offers a perfect combination of bathing bay and mountain location.
Here, one meets the typical bather tourist , who spends his day on the beach and gets a cancer red roast in the sun, but also the individual tourist who’s on his multi-day tour only passing by with a big backpack, sleeping bag and tent in order to replenish his supplies.
The represented nationalities are numerous and the masses of people are colourful, during the day and at night people walk along the promenade and sit in the many cafés, bars and restaurants, but it is clearly quieter than in the party strongholds.

Sollér

One of the first hikes led us to Sollér, the capital of the municipality. It is located in a large valley, only 4 km from the port by road, but the footpath leads through the mountains, so the hike is much longer than one is used to from the flat country.
Furthermore, the progress is clearly delayed by the fact that I stop again and again to capture the landscape in photos. ;-)

The almost 15000 inhabitants of the region live mostly in the two towns of Sollér (about 8000 inhabitants) and Port de Sollér (a little less than 3000 inhabitants). It is easier to travel by car, bus or train than it is to walk between the two places. The "red lightning bolt" is a historical small train that, despite its name, runs between Sollér and Palma, much slower than you’d expect by it’s name.
I didn't take the train myself, because it seemed much more fun to look at the train from the outside than to sit in its crowded interior.

In Sollér itself, the townscape is characterised by many small alleys and rustic patrician houses from the 17th and 18th centuries. The church Sant Bartomeu and the adjacent bank building, which was designed by Joan Rubió i Bellever, a pupil of Gaudi, belong to the local sights.
The place is certainly worth a visit and there is much more to discover.

Fornalutx

Fornalutx

In the northwest of Sollér lies the municipality of Fornalutx.
A day hike also led here, after all, the place is considered to be particularly beautiful and has already won two prizes for it.
It is also the only place of the island where the traditional bull sacrifice is still celebrated, a circumstance that makes the place a little less appealing.
I do not like the idea that an animal adorned is driven through these beautiful alleys to be slaughtered at the end.
Nevertheless, the way there and back was picturesquely beautiful, as was the place itself.

Summit attempt with obstacles

As already mentioned with the GR 221, such a hiking trail also leads through private areas, which not every Mallorcan seems to like. And so a hike sometimes ends in front of a closed gate, where a hiking trail used to be.
The hiking in the Serra de Tramuntana is absolutely recommendable, but you should first make sure that the paths are walkable, otherwise the trip ends in front of a gate.

Beautiful photo story! Mallorca's in my list of top 5 places I want to visit in Europe. 😍

Thank you for your comment. I’m curious, what are the other 4 places on your list?

Posted using Partiko iOS

oh jeez, my bad - I replied to my own comment instead of to your reply! 😅

Oh man, as someone who's never been to Europe, my entire list is mostly touristy as heck! Don't judge! LOL

In no particular order:

  • Mallorca
  • Dubrovnik
  • Barcelona
  • London
  • Paris

I haven‘t been to Dubrovnik, but visited all other places on you list, Barcelona is my personal favorite.
Croatia is also on my wish list. :-)
