My trip to Portugal. Part 2: Evora.steemCreated with Sketch.

in #travelfeed5 years ago (edited)

Member of the most ancient European towns network, an Unesco world heritage site, beautifully preserved and surrounded by medieval walls, the old town of Evora was the second stop of my trip to Portugal and one more episode of the medieval fairy tale I lived for a few days! In case you missed the first part of the story, you can find it here.

The heart of Evora definitely beats in Giraldo Square. With 8 streets beginning from there, it gave me the impression that every single road leads to this emblematic part of the city that took shape almost 500 years ago and hasn't really changed ever since!

A few minutes away are two of the most famous monuments of the city. The "Cathedral of Evora", almost too big to fit in the neighborhood and the "Roman temple of Evora" which reminded me of the numerous similar temples I have seen in Greece! I loved the view from the Diana's garden right next to the temple, too.

Practically in every corner there is one more monument or a museum, the whole city is a history lesson, but what I loved most was to wander around the narrow streets and taking pictures!

My favorite neighborhood though was underneath the arches of the Roman aqueduct where the houses are embedded in the 16th century pillars! I have seen ancient ruins to be used in constructions at a later time but never something like this. Totally mind-blowing!

I spent a whole week in Evora and I just couldn't get enough of it! I walked all over the old town a lot of times, every hour from the morning till the dusk, on sunny and on gloomy days and each time it was a new experience. The buildings seemed to be transformed as the light was changing and every time it was a new story that they had to tell!

@fotostef! We are happy to hear you loved your time in Evora! It's a beautiful quaint city. I (Sam) have been many times as Becca lives near Monsaraz (the castle on the hill by the big lake), which is within reach of Evora. 😊

When one travels and knows new places (there is no fatigue) hahaha is something incredible, but living the experience of knowing new places makes us immune to fatigue do not you think xD?

Evora is a fascinating place full of a lot of history, you took beautiful pictures on your route, you see that everything is very organized, an aerial photograph of that place must be very impressive .. A big hug from Venezuela @fotostef

And yes, pastel de nata and chestnuts were great!

Evora is beautiful @fotostef, much thanks to your photos :) I love the pebblestone walkways and the angles of that you took of the buildings and surroundings. What is it that the cart is selling? I have to admit, the place looks very similar to some of the islands of Greece. Have you been to Greece or do you have plans to go there? Aegina has the temple relic too like a mini Parthenon.

Thank you for stopping by @marblely, I am glad you liked it!
Actually I am Greek and the cart is selling chestnuts, delicious ones :)

Oh 🤦🏻‍♀️ oops ... sorry. You would know for sure :D
Thank you again for sharing the photos. I love chestnuts!!! Merry Christmas @fotostef! :)
