City of Dresden

Dresden is the capital of the German state of Saxony. It has a population of more than 500000 habitants being 10th largest city in Germany. Dresden has a long history as the capital and royal residence for the Electors and Kings of Saxony, who for centuries furnished the city with cultural and artistic splendor, and was once by personal union the family seat of Polish monarchs. The city was known as the Jewel Box, because of its baroque and rococo city centre. The controversial American and British bombing of Dresden in World War II towards the end of the war killed approximately 25,000 people, many of whom were civilians, and destroyed the entire city centre. After the war restoration work has helped to reconstruct parts of the historic inner city, including the Katholische Hofkirche, the Zwinger and the famous Semper Opera.
The city is also one of the most visited in Germany with 4.3 million overnight stays per year. (from Wikipedia)

Streets of Dresden

I arrived around 19:30 in Dresden just in time to enjoy the beautiful Frauenkirche in the sunset light. I was tired but feeling so rewarded watching this magnificent piece of baroque architecture for the first time. With only one hour left of daylight I decided to just wander the streets of the old town area. I soon discovered couple of other architectural beauties like the Opera House and the Zwinger Museum complex.

Church of Our Lady (Frauenkirche)

Built in the 18th century, the church was destroyed during World War II. The remaining ruins were left for 50 years as a war memorial, before being rebuilt between 1994 and 2005.

I visited Dresden just once, during Xmas time and it wasnt so good was really overcrowded. It looks you chose better time and you had a blast;) Great!! :)

Dresden is nice in summer, a lot of terraces to enjoy that magnificent baroque and rococo city centre. I bet a warm autumn day is even better :)

Beautiful photos! I once sailed to Dresden from Decin, Czech Republic. It is a charming city :)

Beautiful portion of Elbe to sail from Decin to Dresden, I really enjoyed the scenery. The upcoming post will be more about that.

I agree, it is a very nice part of the cruise :) I just wish we had a better weather, it was very cloudy. Anyway, looking forward to your upcoming post! :)

I can't believe that! I used to live in Prague for so long and Dresden is very not far away from there.. I was asked by my friends many times to go there but I though that there was nothing to see. Well, it looks like an amazing city! I will have to plan a trip there.

I like to see that the roads for cycling are in very good conditions. It looks like a perfect place to bike. And you were very lucky with the weather!

Looking forward to see more from your tour!

Thank you for sharing, Dan!

You should definitely visit Dresden, it has a good vibe to it, great mix of old and modern, I think you'll like it. Look forward to see your review of Dresden!

I'm sure I will. BTW, where are you now? Are you cycling?

I only had one week at the end of august reserved for cycling but was enough to recharge my batteries for the year to come and it continues to fuel me with each post I write here :)

You should post more! Every week I want to feature you in my entry for Pay It Forward Curation contest but then your post is 7 days old and it wouldn't be accepted, so I can't do it which makes me sad. It would make me very happy if you would post more :)

I'm not that good with words but I think that with practice I will eventually grow my writing muscle, I'm still working to make it a daily habit.Thank you for the motivation! I believe EuroVelo has the potential to make a lot of people happy.

I admire your bike tours, friend @discovereurovelo ! Riding a bike always brings pleasure to me, but I have never traveled far!
