Sammichele di Bari: an ancient medieval village

in #travelfeed4 years ago

Sammichele di Bari Is a small city with just over 6,000 inhabitants, it has a small, well-known village, made up of small, pretty and always well-kept streets, where there are many braceries, which, especially in summer, set up the streets with their tables and embers, attracting the attention of the people, especially of the many regular visitors who regularly arrive in the city to enjoy excellent grilled meat.

All roads and alleys are really well cared for; the inhabitants try to keep the village in a condition that is always presentable, with flourishing full of colors and plants always taken care of. There are many cats in the streets because the inhabitants always offer food and shelter and they certainly seem to like it very much.

The main entrance to the village is through a large arch, flanked by buildings that used to be the city walls. Disturbance at the entrance to the village, there is the ample Piazza Vittorio Veneto, home to groups of old people who like to spend their time with friends and groups of younger people who enjoy chasing each other around the perimeter of the square. On the square there is the majestic ***Chiesa Matrice of Santa Maria del Carmine*** dating back to the nineteenth century AD and main destination of the faithful inhabitants of the town.

___

The oldest part of the city is represented by an old watchtower (built between 1200 and 1300 AD), initially christened ***Torre delle Quattro Miglia*** and later called ***Torre Centurione***, due to the succession of proprietary families, today took over the name of Castello Caracciolo, the last noble family that owned the Tower and the palace built next to the historic building, in the nineteenth century, forming a small courtyard.
