Pearl of the Adriatic
Polignano-a-Mare
I continue the story of the town of Polignano a Mare. It is amazing that when I was there, looking at the sea and the sun and at beautiful cliffs, I did not know anything about this place. Now, when I am preparing these my travel notes, I learn a lot of new things and am happy to share with you.
Firstly, I learned that local beaches regularly receive very high marks in special publications dealing with the beach theme. Moreover, this place itself is called the pearl of the Adriatic. The beaches of the Polignano coast from year to year fall into the list of the best beaches in Europe according to the FEE (Association for Environmental Education).
In the bay that I photographed the most there is a beach. This small free beach is wedged between two high cliffs. It is called Lama Monakile. Another name for Lama Monachile is Cala Porta. The beach is considered the best in Europe and Italy according to two reputable associations.
The beach is literally a stone's throw from the historic center of Polignano a Mare. This is the most famous and photographed beach in the vicinity of Bari. Clear water is washed by smooth white pebbles in the bay, surrounded by beautiful sea caves and rocks protruding from the water. Above, on a rock, you can see the houses of the old city.
The beach got its name thanks to the ancient Roman bridge, on which you can pass even now. He crosses the Lama of Monacile and crosses into the old Traianova road.
Trajan's Road - was built between 108 and 110 years after Christmas in the era of Emperor Trajan and connected the city of Benevento in Campania and Brindisi in Puglia.
This bridge is located in the city center, runs over the deep Lama Monachile Gorge and has the characteristic features of the structure inherent in all ancient Roman bridges: it is made of brick and has an arched structure.
We crossed the bridge and ended up in the old city. Previously, in the old days, the city could be reached only through one gate. The gate is called the Arch della Porta.
Having passed through this gate we found ourselves in a real medieval city.
This is a very beautiful little town. Passing through the little crooked streets, we went out onto the balcony with a view of the sea. We stood on the very rock that we had previously seen from the shore.
I looked down and my head was spinning. The height was very large and below the stones the waters of the sea beat.
Despite the fact that the rocks are high, the waves are even stronger. I saw photos in one of the local cafes. In those photographs there were waves that surged up to the top of the rock. The balcony on which I stood was also covered by a wave.
It would be very interesting to look at such waves, although this is scary.
