The Flinders Ranges - Port Germein
Port Germein is a small town in South Australia. It is located 219 kilometres from Adelaide. The town was named after Samuel Germein who discovered it in 1840. It has approximately a population of 250 people.
Port Germien has what was once the longest jetty in South Australia. The jetty was built due to shallow water, to allow grain ships to dock. Port Germein provided the ships with grain that came from the area. The jetty was extended to its full length of 1680min 1883.. The Port was no longer used in 1934 when rail was used for transport instead. After storm damage the jetty length was reduced to 1532m.
Lighthouse
1894 a lighthouse was erected. In 1917 it was replaced by an AGA flashing light. In 1975 the lighthouse was re-established at its current site.
Former Hotel
The former local pub named the Pier Hotel was a place where sailors, local farmers and wharfies used to meet. The building later became a general store. Today it is no longer in use.
