Wine Museum in Melnik. Tasting Tour

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

Bulgaria is divided into five vineyard areas for growing grapes and producing wine. Bulgaria makes dry wines according to the generally accepted classification, but among these dry ones there are more acidic or sweeter ones. So, the sweetest of the dry wines in Bulgaria is made in the Sredna Struma region (as they say), officially the South-Western wine region. The tourist center of this region is the museum town of Melnik. This is the smallest city in the country, there are no more than 190 people living here. Even there is no school. Those children who live in Melnik go to school in a nearby village. The city lives in tourism and consists almost entirely of hotels, restaurants and museums.

At the end of 2013, a wine museum was opened in Melnik.

The address of this museum is simple: the city of Melnik, "Museum of Wine." Just ask where it is and go up the street, in the end, on the right you will see a bridge over a dry river, on which the “Museum of Wine” will be written.

It is necessary to stop at the edge of the restaurant, which is located above the museum.

Entrance to the museum is 2.5 euros in terms of leva. This amount includes inspection of the exposition and tasting of 4 varieties of wine and one brand of rakia (Bulgarian grape vodka).

The museum has several exhibition rooms and a tasting room. Here are the wines produced in this region - Sredna Struma.

The collection has over 400 bottles, among them there are expensive exhibits, which, by the way, are not for sale. There is wine here and in 1941, but not all of them are locally produced - some from France and Austria.

The exposition traces the history of winemaking in this region over a thousand years: tools for harvesting grapes, tables and barrels for pressure of grapes, dishes and imitation of a wine cellar, so that we can see how it should be stored ready wine.

The entrance for children (without tasting) costs 1 lev, it is 50 eurocents.

There is also a price for pensioners - 2 levs is 1 euro, but also without tasting. Anyone who wants to taste wine pays 5 levs (2.5 euros).

We went to Melnik on October 26 and, of course, could not pass by the “Wine Museum” and not taste the famous local varieties.

We were offered wine from these barrels. There are four varieties: white blend, red blend, “Shiroka Melnikishka Lyka” and merlot “Melnik 13”.

We also tried grape brandy, which turned out to be surprisingly pleasant, soft and light.

After tasting, you can buy the wine you like. It will be poured upon you right away and corked with a special stopper, as well as a simple, handwritten label will be glued.

We liked the red young wine "Shiroka Melnika Lyka" most of all. It seemed to me that it smells like black currant)

In general, you will be in Melnik, do not pass by the wine museum. In Sofia, such a pleasure is five times more expensive!

The museum is open every day from 10.00 to 19.00.

Thank you for your time and attention.
