More profitable than college: Learning a second language

in #travel8 years ago (edited)

I wish not to offend you, but I need to be straight with you, if you don't speak another language you are dumb.

The good news is that you don't have to stay dumb and the fact that you are dumb in one thing doesn't mean that you are in every thing, but to be able to leave that behind you first need to recognize it as a reality. It's not just about all the extra words that explain the world, it's not even about the extended access to all these human experiences that you gain, in essence, to be able to speak in another language, you are forced to change the way you structure your thoughts.

The easiest way to learn a language is to forget you already speak one. This guy can tell you a little bit more about it, to this day this is the best advice I've found on the matter:

What do you get with more than one language?

  • Job opportunities
At the very least you can be an interpreter, but in learning another language your job skills increase since so do your people's skills.

  • Larger living area
You will feel more confident to travel, your limits would extend to other places where you are comfortable communicating.

  • Bigger dating pool
How many have learned a language for this reason alone? lol

  • Healthier brain
Your brain needs to BECOME flexible to speak, to think in another language. This constant exercise of associations can help keep you on top of your game, specially as you age.

  • Wider perspective
Perhaps most importantly, when you learn another language not only the order of your thoughts has to change, but as a result your perspective changes too. In addition to being able to acquire knowledge about other realities around the world, there's also that thing were you can't avoid gaining this knowledge; You can't just disconnect your ears and what has been seen can't be unseen.

  • Thick skin
You will need to learn that making mistakes is part of learning. Some people may make fun of you, others can be nasty all together. But if you are patient, not only will you learn to curse back, but you may not even feel like you need to at the end because you will have matured into a more understanding human being.

Having all these things gives you the ability to make more precise predictions about all sorts of things which can be monetized.

But I speak English...

Native English speakers have an advantage when learning other languages. Being that English is so popular many efforts to teach another language default back to English. You shouldn't have a problem finding dictionaries, courses, even people to practice with. Good luck!

This is so true! I have been learning Spanish off and on, and I love the little things I can pick up, including the fun little blurbs in movies and tv shows that go untranslated! Thanks for posting this!
