Onion tarts and confetti fights – A visit at the Zibelemärit in Bern

 Three months of University life have gone by, things were plain simple now. I came across this festival called Zibelemärit, which made my heart skipped a bit in happiness of something new to dull, long winter. 

 

 Zibelemärit or The Onion Market is on the fourth monday of November every year in Bern. It is the biggest farmer’s market, which has been a traditional folk festival since the Middle age! (15th century). The market has literally everything to do with the onion; ranging from onions of every kind and shape, onion tart, onion quiche, onion soup, onion sausages, and oh...can’t miss the Glühwein (hot mulled wine) in winter. 

 My friend lives in Fribourg. She caught the train from there to Bern early in the morning to join the festival. Our meeting point was near the main train station in front of Loeb at 7 am. From there starts the line of stalls along the streets of old town Bern. Yes, the weather was cold, but yes there were sooo many people coming out in this early morning. Confetti was glittering in the air as well as on the ground.   

 We scroll through the markets, trying out a homemade onion tart and the onion soup. It was perfect for a cold November day. I see onion necklaces, which come in various colors, stringing around people’s neck. Beautifully braided onions were everywhere, left me thinking I wouldn’t want to chop them off of that. We constantly getting confetti thrown at from younger kids and older kids with a greeting smile.   

 An hour later, we had to leave. We caught the 8:34 am. train to Fribourg to be there just on time for our design class, with confettis still stuck in our hair.
