Streets of Milan - Part One

in #travel6 years ago

My good lady and I travelled to Italy for a week recently as some of my followers noticed {friendly wave to @anna-mi and @kiwideb}. Over the next few days I will share some photographs of our journey. This set were taken in Milan on our second day as we set out to explore the various museums and churches, walking an impressive 17 km’s in total.

One of the significant differences I noted between South African cities and European cities is the fact that one is always totally surrounded by high buildings in Europe

My favorite pic of this set, the reflections sharing quite a lot of at first hidden details

We were struck by the amazing delicatessens and the quality of the ‘fast foods’ available. We ate out at two restaurants and quickly decided using the produce available we were better served preparing our own food.

Piazza Del Duomo, where probably the most significant Milan architecture is located…. The Duomo Cathedral. (I believe there is also a Duomo Cathedral in Florence)

This magnificent building is the 5th largest Christian church in the world covering more than 109000 square feet, an entire city block.

They say there are more statues on this gothic-style cathedral than any other building in the world. There are 3,400 statues, 135 gargoyles and 700 figures that decorate Milan Duomo! Climb the stairs or take the lift to the rooftop to fully appreciate the architecture of the most renowned silhouette in the city. From the terrazza you’ll see breathtaking views across Milan and, on clear days, the snow-capped peaks of the Alps. You can also see the famous Madonnina, the gold-colored statue of Mary that stands on the cathedral’s highest spire.

Tomorrow I shall share with you some photographs of the interior of the church, as well as some more facts about the history of this particular cathedral.

As always, thank you for reading and the continued support.

That cathedral is huge. And spiky. Looks so impressive in the photo, must have been rather intimidating in person. And I kind of want to climb it but am in no shape whatsoever to do that so will have to stick to Assassin's Creed XD

That cathedral is astonishing. The work that went into it! I'll look forward to seeing the inside of it now.

When considering the period they were built (this one was around 1314 a.d. ) the structures are mega impressive!! I look forward to sharing the rest of the pics... and of course Como and the snow.
