Giants that Can Save Earth - Khao Kho, Thailand

in #travel7 years ago

The giant eco-friendly turbines that we had visited at sunset a few days before had left 'Green Footprints' in our minds and we thought that they deserved a return visit outside the hours of vampires, when we could spend a generous amount of time admiring their splendour and absorbing the views.

A Return out of Appreciation

According to my research, the wind turbines produce enough electricity to power 20% of the homes in the province of Petchabun. Now with a population of 995,807 that means these Eco-Giants are providing power to just under 200,000 people in Petchabun. The province is making a significant impact in reducing its 'carbon footprint' which I imagine is already extremely low in comparison to the grey smoggy silhouette of Bangkok.

On our first visit to the wind-farm we were offered a tour by some locals, but it was getting dark and the temperature was dropping rapidly. So on our return journey we decided to take up the offer and the tickets for the tour were around 60 Baht, which equates to next to nothing especially if you compare it with SBD or Steem! The tour was provided in an open-sided bus, which gave you a nice open view of the picturesque surroundings, with no pesky glare off windows to battle with and very convenient access to hop on and off the bus when necessary.

Strawberries and Views

The open sided bus stopped off at several different point allowing us to enjoy the views and show some appreciation to the giant- nature absorbing turbines. One of the first stop off points at the beginning gave a great perspective of the turbines in formation, surrounded by local produce being grown at their feet, including purple sweet potatoes and strawberries in abundance.

The Feet of a Giant

After enjoying a few sample strawberries and completing my duties as chief kodak capturer, we hopped back on the open-sided bus to our next viewing spot. They had set up a swing with a scenic backdrop and we were really close to the feet of an Eco-Giant. It gave us a moment to appreciate one of the mega-structures, you could hear its true power with the blades whooshing around at pace. Although the real power was coming from mother nature herself blowing around the turbines with her mighty breath!

One Final Swing

The final leg of our tour stopped off at another spot with an even bigger swing and an even better view, although it wasn't the best shooting conditions for my phone and the Sun was too high really to get the most out of my trusty Samsung. This final spot had 180 degree views and we spent longer at this spot than any other. Our extended stay meant that we missed our ride back on our original vehicle, but luckily there were plenty more passing by for us to climb aboard and return to our starting point.

In my eyes Khao Kho wind farm was a great trip, with a decent DSLR camera you could get some epic shots! The views were spectacular and the turbines were tremendous. Wouldn't it be amazing if all of our countries could run off the wonderful power of mother nature!
