Discovering Hidden Gems of the Canal - Bangkok, Thailand

Thailand never ceases to amaze me and upon this trip Mrs Explorer and I found some eye popping pieces of artwork. The best part of this exploration was it was totally uplanned and we came across some surprising masterpieces. We had taken our junior explorer for a day of outdoor activities on the outskirts of Bangkok near a place called Rama 2, we were expecting to be waiting around for him all day, but the organisers had advised all the parents to come back at the end of the day!

I had a scour around to see if there was anywhere to explore, when I came across an open gate which led onto a canal path. On noticing this gateway to new pastures, my eyes lit up knowing the possibilites of photographic gems upon our journey.

This colourful butterfly on the wall invited souls to utilise it as a prop. It had a camera symbol in the middle, but you had to be careful as there was about a foot and a half gap between the path and the ledge to stand on. If you misplaced your footing, a lovely drop straight into the canal was waiting for you! Nevertheless Mrs Explorer was up for the challenge and it seemed rude to not take up the wall's invite for a kodak moment.

This butterfly led onto the next epic piece of art, which led along a wall for about 30 metres. It was like we had been given a ticket to a secret artshow! The local artists here are really giving back to the community, although we saw very few others venturing on the same journey as us!

The eye-dazzling piece was filled with all aspects of mother nature, and if it wasn't so hot we could've stood there for a good hour of time. So here are a few shots of this hidden canal treasure:

We continued upon our quest, with eyes scouring for our next find. It had almost become a competition, who would discover the next gem? It wasn't long before we came across this next vibrant piece.

Look closely and read the text, can you work out what the men on the right are doing?

We pressed on, embracing our canal expedition, wondering what we might discover next. After no time at all Mrs Explorer spotted a colourful arrangement within her sights. To get a better shot I climbed up a rickety bridge, which felt like it was going to crack under my weight, inviting me to take an abrupt bath in the canal.

We stopped off for a refreshement, as the midday Sun was beating down and we needed to quench our thirst. We found a charming old lady and asked to buy a cold drink, she returned with an ice-cold Pepsi.

There was one more discovery on our art journey and it was on the walls of the local temple, which was jaw droppingly beautiful, but I shall save that for a future post!
