My Week in Maui--Day 2 & 3

in #travel8 years ago (edited)

It has been a glorious few days here in Maui.

My family and I have been so blessed to take a trip like this and honestly, I encourage all of you to take a trip here, if you haven't already. I will bet my life savings that you will have a marvelous time. Seriously, take me up on this bet.

Day 2

As you may know from my last post, I am a pale individual (as shown in pictures). In turn, being out in the sun all day (on day 1) at the beach may lead to some uncomfortable situations EVEN IF sunscreen is applied multiple times...

So here it is: I got super burnt. Super sun burnt all over my body. Now, I have very distinguished tan lines (first world problems, I know!), but it actually hurts, especially on the back of my legs. I was able to reapply sunscreen to my upper body not knowing that I needed it on my legs because I was in the water the whole time. Its like a riddle: how does one get so burnt on the lower half and not the upper half even though the upper half is exposed to the sun, whereas the lower half was not? My best answer: since the water is so "sea-through" (I always enjoy a good pun) the sun had no barriers to attack my pale little legs. In conclusion, since my family and I seemed to get so burned the day before, we kind of took a day off. My nephew even got some burn on his shoulders and back, and he has never had sunburn before! He has been to Maui now 11 times, and this was his first experience with the sting of the sun's power. Don't get me wrong, we went back out to the beach in the morning, regardless of our state of pain. This time, however, we were mostly covered from head to toe in clothing. Thankfully, I have some workout clothes that fare well in water. (Thanks to my future mother-in-law and best friend for the awesome presents!) I looked like I knew what I was doing in my mock wet suit. This only lasted a hour or two and then we decided to head back to the condo. There everyone took a nap. My sweet little nephew took a two and a half hour nap. Here is a photo for proof of his open mouth sleeping. #passedout

The rest of the evening was chill as well. Subway for dinner (yay!) and we rented London Has Fallen from redbox. Hahahaha. Such a grrrrrrreat movie (sarcasm). Thanks Gerard Butler for that (more sarcasm).

Day 3

As we were recuperating from our topical wounds, we were again ready to go to the beach. This time we brought along our snorkel gear and boogie boards. My mom, who is in her 60's, was adorable as she had all of her snorkel gear on and was ready to head out into the water. She lasted longer than my 10 year old nephew and me. There wasn't too much to see on the ocean floor, but it was neat to be able to see a crab or two burrow down into the sand. Thus again feeding my fear that I would get pinched again like I did on Day 1. Our routine now is that we will go to the beach for a few hours in the morning and then head over to the pool for some less nature intense relaxation. We have yet to kayak. Hopefully tomorrow we will!

After the pool, we got dressed and went into town to do some sight seeing. Shortly into our drive my mom fell asleep, taking her afternoon nap as some senior citizens do. We went to Kihei to do some shopping. I had to take a photo in front of the Kamala Park Whale because whales are my fav.

So touristy!

Most exciting news is for me is that I bought my wedding dress at one of the little shops here. Since I can't show the dress in case a special someone reads this post, I will just show my reaction when trying it on. It was a good feeling.

My mom spent $45 on it, (she insisted) so I am extremely happy to get a bargain for my nontraditional dress while having these beautiful memories attached to where and when I bought it. Hawaii will be a part of that story!

We ate dinner at Longhi's at the shops in Wailea. We had great food, but it was a little pricey. They are known for their breakfast (supposedly they have cinnamon rolls as big as your face!), so we will definitely be going back on Sunday before our flight. Plus, it has beautiful out door seating!

After some shopping, we ended the day with a quick night swim back at the condo.

So far, this has been one amazing and relaxing trip.

Mahalo!

Until tomorrow,

-Tessa
