I would like to introduce to you here a not so well known excursion destination near Vienna, the beautiful capital of Austria. We visited Vienna's old town, the beautiful Schönbrunn Palace and its zoo. All great excursion destinations but the Seegrotte in Hinterbrühl is something different and nothing for claustrophobics.

It is the largest underground lake in Europe with 6200 m2, which was created when it was mined in the mine where gypsum has been mined since 1848 and a blast in 1912 led to a massive water intake of 20 million litres. The mine was then bought by a private person and used for various things like mushroom growing, which did not work. At the end of World War II the Nazis had the water pumped out and built airplane parts to say more exactly the hulls of the Heinkel 162 He.

After the end of the war from 1948 the cave was flooded again to make this show grotto available to the public. To accomplish this, 50000 litres of water must be pumped into the local river every day to maintain an average water level of 1.2m. In 1993 parts of the movie The Three Musketeers by Walt Disney were filmed there and, as is often the case with film sets, they are simply taken to the spot and left here, the dragon boat from the film and a dungeon are still standing there.

But enough of facts here a few impressions I have collected there. The following pictures describe our visit. I was particularly impressed by the reflections during the boat trip, which are also the highlight of the visit to the cave. It is impossible to estimate how deep the water is, as it has no suspended particles and is therefore incredibly clear. Also impressive is the Festhalle, which was built during the construction of the mine and leads to the surface with a staircase, which is unfortunately closed.

vorstellen möchte ich euch hier ein eher nicht so bekanntes Ausflugsziel bein Wien der schönen Hauptstadt Österreichs. Wir haben uns in Wien die Altstadt das tolle Schloss Schönbrunn und den dazugehörigen Tierpark angeschaut. Alles tolle Ausflugsziele aber die Seegrotte in Hinterbrühl ist mal was anderes und nichts für Klaustrophobiker.

Hier findet man den grössten unterirdischen See Europas mit 6200 m2. Entstanden ist dieser als im Bergwerk in dem seit 1848 Gips abgebaut wurde, eine Sprengung 1912 zu einem Massiven Wassereinbruch von 20 Millionen Liter geführt hat. Das Bergwerk wurde daraufhin von einer Privatperson gekauft und für verschiedenste Dinge genutzt unter anderem hat man sich an der Champignonzucht versucht, was allerdings nicht funktioniert hat. Zum Ende des 2ten Weltkriegs haben die Nazis das Wasser abpumpen lassen und dort Flugzeugteile um genauer zu sagen die Rümpfe der Heinkel 162 He gebaut.

Nach Ende des Krieges ab 1948 wurde die Grotte wieder geflutet um diese Show Grotte der Öffentlichkeit zur Verfügung zu stellen. Um dies zu bewerkstelligen müssen täglich 50000 Liter in den örtlichen fluss gepumpt werden um den durchschnittlichen Wasserspiegel von 1,2m zu halten. 1993 wurden dort Teile des Filmes Die Drei Musketiere von Walt Disney gedreht und wie das so bei Filmsets oftmals ist, werden diese einfach an Ort und stelle gelassen auch so hier, das Drachenboot aus dem Film sowie ein Verlies stehen weiterhin an Ort und Stelle.

Aber genug von Fakten hier ein paar Eindrücke die ich dort gesammelt habe. Die folgenden Bildern schildern unseren Besuch. Besonders Eindrucksvoll fand ich die Spiegelungen während der Bootsfahrt die auch gleichzeitig das Highlight des Grotten Besuches darstellen. Man kann nicht abschätzen wie Tief das Wasser ist, da es keine Schwebeteilchen besitzt und dadurch unheimlich klar ist. Ebenfalls beeindruckend die bereits beim Bau des Bergwerk entstande Festhalle die Verbunden mit einem, leider gesperrten Treppenhaus, zur Oberfläche führt.
