Traveling The New York Amish Trail
Come join my photo tour of a day trip I took traveling along Route 62 following the N.Y. Amish Trail.
It was a beautiful Fall day, the perfect opportunity to take a ride and enjoy the changing foliage. My husband and I drove to the Southern Tier and ended up seeing some interesting things in the Amish community.
"Amish House"
As we traveled along the route we noticed that practically every house had clothes hanging out on the line to dry.
"Amish Farmstead"
The barns on an Amish farm seem to be 2-3 times the sizes of their homes. What I found interesting is the barns all seemed to be in better shape than their homes were. I thought that was quite an interesting observation.
"Cows in the pasture"
I stopped the car to visit with the cows from the nearby farm. They immediately started to all come towards me as I took their picture. As a young girl, I used to visit my uncle's farm during the summer recess. Milking the cows and feeding the calves were some of my fondest childhood memories. Needless to say, I love cows!
"Giving Birth"
This cow was quite far out in the field. I noticed the dark head of the calf on the ground, only to realize she had just given birth. You can see by the photo that she is still bloody from the event.
I got to watch her clean the calf for awhile before moving on. That was quite the surprise, and the highlight of the day.
"The School House"
We drove past a few children with lunch buckets and books headed for the neighborhood school. Some of the children were already inside and looking out the window as I stopped to take a photo.
"Sawmill"
This was the entrance to an Amish sawmill. There were men working behind the buildings, I respected their privacy and only took a photo of the logs. Amish do not like to have their photo taken, as they believe that it traps their souls on the Earth and they cannot move on at death.
"Laundry"
Another home with laundry hanging out to dry on this warm, sunny day.
"Mother Hen"
This hen was watching carefully over her flock. She quickly moved them further away from me as I tried to photograph them. There were roosters and chickens strutting all over the Amish farm.
"Amish Buggy"
A typical horse-drawn buggy is the mode of transportation for the Amish. They do not drive modern vehicles, but will often ask for a ride into town from the locals they know.
"Horse & Buggy"
This gentleman waved to me as we passed each other on the highway. I took this picture of him from behind, so as not to offend him in any way.
There were many Amish specialty shops all along the drive, from baked goods, wood furniture and cabinet making to fabric shops. I even saw the local blacksmiths shop where men were gathered chatting with each other among their horse and buggies. I sure they were all catching up on the news in their community.
All in all, the day trip was quite delightful and I stopped at a cheese factory to get some fresh cheese curds and maple syrup from the local farmers. They were oh so tasty too!

"Amish Farmstead"
The barns on an Amish farm seem to be 2-3 times the sizes of their homes. What I found interesting is the barns all seemed to be in better shape than their homes were. I thought that was quite an interesting observation.

Vi naw onst .... it reminds me of bein' in Lancaster, PA. Did you know that the Mennonites came first, followed by the Amish? ("The Pennsylvania Dutch" by Fredric Klees. Highly recommend this book if you can find it. I have a first edition 1950. ) Love the wash hanging out on the line. I am from Pennsylvania Dutch heritage and I still hang my wash out just like my mother did.
That is awesome! Yes, I did know they came first. My roots are from that area and I visit every year to see relatives. I grew up playing with the Amish children that lived near my grand parents homestead. Also, I still love to hang my clothes on the line as well. There is nothing like sleeping on line dried sheets. ;-)
