Travels of / Voyages de 2017 (part 2)

I've decided to do a bilingual post. After starting the year with a trip to Iasi I returned to Romania one month later, to Bucharest (where I was born) this time for my Dad's 80th birthday. I happened to be there during an interesting period as there were massive street protests against a clumsy attempt by corrupt politicians to ... depenalize corruption !	J'ai décidé de faire un article bilingue (mon premier). Après avoir commencé l'année avec un voyage à Iasi je suis retourné un mois plus tard à Bucarest, ma ville natale, pour le 80-ième anniversaire de mon père. Je me suis par chance trouvé là lors d'une série de manifestations de rue impressionnantes contre une tentative absurde des politiciens véreux de ... dépénaliser la corruption !

Despite the biting cold, a huge amount of people descended in the streets of many big cities to protest, a few months only after the elections (won by the corrupt heirs of the communists with about 45% of the vote on a 39% participation rate). I couldn't help but ask myself "Where were you guys during the ballot? Had you voted, we might not have need to freeze our bones here". Then I followed the thought, integrating the context and trying to understand: the Romanian political class has built a system so corrupt that a newcomer (in 2016 it was the "USR" party) only needs to be perceived as slighly better in order to send its own "barons" to Parliament. But because "slightly better" than an abysmal standard does not mean "good" in absolute terms, the overall participation stays low. People perceive the political offer as generally not worth the effort to vote. "They are all the same".

En dépit d'un froid mordant, un marée humaine est descendue dans les rues des grandes villes pour protester, à quelques mois seulement des élections législatives (gagnées par les héritiers corrompus des communistes, avec environ 45% des voix sur une participation de seulement 39%). Je n'ai pas pu m'empêcher de penser "Où étiez-vous le jour du vote? Si vous aviez voté, nous n'aurions peut-être pas à nous les geler ici". Puis j'ai poursuivi ma réflexion, essayant de comprendre: la classe politique roumaine a construit un système si corrompu qu'un nouveau venu (en 2016 c'était "l'USR") n'a besoin que d'être "un peu mieux" pour pouvoir envoyer ses propres "barons" au parlement. Mais puisque "un peu mieux" ne veut pas dire "bien" dans l'absolu, la participation aux élections reste basse. Les citoyens perçoivent l'offre politique comme insuffisamment alléchante pour se déplacer au vote. "Tous pourris".

We traveled again in early June, and on our way to Wien we stopped in Ulm, in Germany. This city resonates with me for more than one reason. First of all, because of the battle of Ulm during the Napoleon era. I am a big admirer of Napoleon (more as the architect of many institutions of the modern French State than as a warmonger, but well ...). Secondly, because I've studied in France (Paris) and my College was located on "Ulm street" , so named after Napoleon's victory

Nous sommes repartis début juin vers Vienne et nous nous sommes arrêtés une nuit à Ulm, en Allemagne. Cette ville résonne avec moi à plusieurs titres: 1) à cause de la bataille d'Ulm car je suis un grand admirateur de Napoléon (plus en tant qu'architecte d'un grand nombre d'institutions de l'Etat Français moderne que comme faiseur de guerre mais bon) 2) parce que j'ai fait mes études en France à Paris, à la rue d'Ulm

What I've learned is that Ulm is also the city where Albert Einstein was born. The city erected a granite monument on the place where the house of his parents used to be. Here are some pictures I've taken in Ulm. I'm thrilled at the idea of storing them on the blockchain. Maybe Steemit won't be around anymore 35 years from now. Maybe Google, forced to pay for the users' data, had by then jacked up the prices of storage to the point where I had to take back my photos on my own NAS and that NAS had long broke down and become unreadable. But taken together, between the blockchain copy, the "cloud" copy and my own copy, our chances to affectionately browse these photos again 35 years from now can only be higher

J'ai appris que Ulm est aussi la ville natale d'Albert Einstein. La ville a érige un monument en granite à l'endroit où se trouvait la maison dans laquelle la famille Einstein avait vécu. Voici quelques photos prises à Ulm. Je suis content de pouvoir les stocker sur la blockchain. Peut-être que Steemit ne tournera plus d'ici 35 ans. Peut-être que, confronté à l'obligation de payer pour utiliser les données de ses utilisateurs, le stockage sur Google deviendra si cher que je serai amené à rapatrier mes photos sur mon propre NAS et que ce NAS sera depuis longtemps mort et ses données illisibles. Mais tout ça pris ensemble, entre la copie sur la blockchain, la copie dans le cloud et ma propre copie, nos chances de pouvoir regarder à nouveau ces photos d'ici 35 ans ne pourront être que plus grandes.

The other side of the building, note the beautiful statues next to the windows, the fountain to the left and the contrast with the glass-and-steel pyramid behind (Louvre style anyone?)	L'autre façade du bâtiment, remarquez les délicates statues autour des fenêtres ainsi que la fontaine à gauche et le contraste avec la pyramide de verre et acier derrière (ça m'a fait penser au Louvre bien que les proportions soient différentes)

Finally a picture taken on the shore of the Danube river which crosses the city (and which also has a special significance for Romanians as it flows into the Black Sea through Romania). Note in the background the spire of the Dom, the highest gothic spire in the world.	Enfin une photo prise sur les bords du Danube, un fleuve qui a une signification particulière pour les roumains puisqu'il se verse dans la Mer Noire après avoir traversé la Roumanie. Notez à l'arrière plan de la photo la flèche de la cathédrale d'Ulm, la cathédrale gothique la plus haute du monde.

A real "travel-blogger" would have posted more photos with the cathedral, which is beautiful, and other sights of the city, of which there are surprisingly many. But I cannot claim that title yet. If you want a more "professional" travelog on Ulm, I found this one (quite good, though it's in French) Enjoy!	Un vrai bloggeur aurait posté plus de photos avec la cathédrale, qui est magnifique, et d'autres vues de la ville, qui n'en manque pas. Mais je ne peux pas prétendre à ce titre pour le moment. Si vous voulez lire un bon "travelog" sur Ulm, j'ai trouvé celui-ci, en français. Bonne lecture !
