The Stone Monument in the Ruined Temple, Go Dal Sa, Korea

in #travel5 years ago

What was left in the ruined temple place was not so much.
Actually the open and desolate space might be suited for the ruined temple place.
The most prominent thing among those things could be found in the ruins was the monument for the great monk.

The monument was placed on the bottom made up of the stone which had been carved after the turtle.
The meaning of the turtle in the far eastern society is living a long life.

The owner of this monument was said the great monk Won Jong who had lived in early Goryeo Dynasty.
When the body where the record was written was found, it was broken into several pieces.
The body was sent to the museum for the protection. Instead the imitation was made there.

So the head part and the bottom were real and the body was the imitation.
The head part was carved after the dragon. Its appearance looked as real

The bottom part was made after the turtle. And the turtle was also vivid as the dragon of the head part.

The tail, the feet and the back was as precise as the real one.
The appearances seemed to be exaggerated a little.

My mom was so interested in the monument and the carved appearances.

Sort:

I always admire the workmanship of the people of old, especially since (we assume) they were working with simpler tools.
Korea is kind of a distant dream for me. I've never been near that part of the world at all, and It would be amazing to visit one day. I wish I had done it a decade ago when I was more 'free' :)

Hey, turtles are 'slowwalkers' like you ;)

It is quite amazing that there is so little difference to the naked eye between the real one and the one made for it. The details of the monument are superb, given the age and how things decompose with time.

Perhaps they seem exaggerated in the tail and feet, but, to the naked eye, it is glorious! I am happy that your mom took great pleasure in this.

extraordinary photos , incredible photos

Photographer and extraordinary object. You as a visitor to the temple are very observant to see these ruins. I always say you are not just photographing but also making details of the ruins of this temple object.
And from this photo, we know how the ancestors built the temple building so grandly. Although only ruins, we can learn more about the temple. Clear and firm ornaments of dragons and turtles prove that they have great techniques.

@slowwalker,
Wow it's so amazing! One of the best stone craft I have seen so far! I like those photography which could be used to get a clear idea about the monument! Thank you for your effort and the way of capturing the photography!

Cheers~

Reading about your detailed blog has already taught me a whole lot about the Goryeo empire, this turtle monument is such a sophistcated piece of art, but after looking at the descriptions I started looking at the turtle head and I can't help notice the semblance with that of a dragon, totally described well and the shots are amazing

Wow.... Soo cute and lovely place photography.. I love it your all post..my dear friend

Yep...Turtles living long time on the planet and Korean society also lived like these I believe. monk Won Jong made unbelievable monument there. Dragon design carved top of monument. Dragons very reach Koreans & Chinese culture. Brilliant photo clicks very closely caught.
