Stone Monuments at the End of the Bridge near Sil Sang Sa temple
As crossing over the bridge, there were 2 stone monuments.
This kind of monument was really interesting for me, because this monument has no relation with Buddhism.
These kinds of monuments were called ‘Jang Seung’ in Korean
Actually those moments used to be made with wood and were made for protecting village.
As far as I remember, it was a first case there stood ‘Jang Seung’ to protect the temple.
Those stone ‘Jang Seung’ were the evidence that Korean Buddhism accepted local traditional religion.
Other interesting point was the face was so much similar to ‘Harbang’ of Jeju Island. In my guess, there must’ve been strong connection between ‘Jang Seung’ and ‘Harbang’ in ancient religion in Korea.
Those ‘Jang Seungs’ seemed to be made after being burned and destroyed by Japanese Army during the war 1592-1597.
It was written that a wealthy family donated those monuments to protect the tempe.
Interesting stone monument with detail shoots.
Sometimes many people don't realize about how interesting thing it is, with hidden story and history.
Thanks for sharing the information

The Jang Seung is so remarkable and yes it doesn't show any signs of relationship with Buddhism because there is no insignia of any sort, it looks quite beautiful really and even when the design is simple, I love the shots from Various angles

How unusual that this Guardian Was Made of Stone instead of the traditional wood. An American missionary describe them in a book called the passing of Korea.
I can see in some regions are made of Stone and for erected to ward of evil spirits. This of course was come as you said similar to the ones of Jeju Island.
It is always amazing to touch on a piece of History in our travels.
Have a happy day.
