9 dragons Pavilion in Sin Reuk Sa temple

in #travel5 years ago (edited)

What attracted my attention at first was 2nd story pavilion in front of the river.
The name of the pavilion was unusual as that of the temple building.
It was “Gu Ryong Ru” meaning 9 dragon pavilion.

This name seemed to be influence by its history.
In Korean Buddhism, dragon means the pawer of the water.
Maybe this temple might've been fired during the Japanese Invasion 1592-1597
So they named this pavilion to protect from the fire with the power of the dragons.

What made me interesting was there were lots of drawings seemed to be influence by Taoism.
Not only Korea but also in the far eastern society, the happiness in this world is more important than that in the next world. In many case, Koreans religion in contemporary era seemed to be substituted externally without being changed internally.

So we can see those kinds of buildings which looked like to be influenced from Taoism in Buddhist temple.
At the second floor, I could see lots of drawings seemed to be mixed by Buddhism and Taoism.

The well carved corner stone told me this pavilion had a long history.

@slowwalker,
Actually I have no experience about Taoism! So it's hard to find architectural differences between Buddhism with it! Nice description and it's pretty cool to see those artworks on the wooden plates! Thank you for your effort!

Cheers~

Great job

posts that are able to give details of the temple. In your explanation we become more aware of the closeness of the Taoist and Buddhist relationships in this temple. Through existing paintings we can see the work of the ancestors really great. they give us a legacy that is a source of history. Especially the photos that you publish aim at through the camera in detail.
those of us who are far from Korea also enjoy the beauty

@slowwalker, The 2nd story pavilion has interesting roof style. It's attractive to me. Behind the hall more halls seems. Those drawings more meaningful I believe coz every temple's drawing learn to us how to live on the planet as good human. Yep...corner stones looks oldest. I think these temple has longest history. Thanks for sharing us.
