Khotyn Fortress

I have already visited this remarkable monument of architecture and one of the seven wonders of Ukraine twice and I want to share with you views and exhibits.

Я вже два рази відвідував цей чудовий пам'ятник архітектури і одне з семи чудес України і хочу поділиться з вами видами і експонатами.

Fierce wars, great uprisings, glorious victories and terrible defeats have left marked impressions in the history of an ancient town Khotyn, which was engaged in violent battles for possession of a powerful fortress. To get to know the history of ancient times, to see places where fierce battles used to be, you are well advised to visit famous Khotyn Fortress. There is an interesting theory concerning the name of the city. They say it was formed from the word "khotity", meaning “want”. Indeed, Khotyn had an advantageous location - at the crossroads of important trade routes and has always been a cherry on the pie for conquerors. Polish kings, Moldovan rulers, Turkish sultans aimed to occupy Khotyn lands. By the order of King Danylo Galician, the stone fortress was built on the place where a wooden one used to be, and it became one of the most powerful fortifications in Eastern Europe.

Хотинська земля була ласим шматком для польських королів, молдавських князів і турецьких султанів. За наказом короля Данила Галицького, на місці дерев’яного форту, зведеного ще у 10 столітті Володимиром Великим, було побудовано кам’яну Хотинську фортецю, яка стала однією з наймогутніших укріплень Східної Європи. Протягом всього свого існування Хотинська фортеця неодноразово, наче міфічний Фенікс, занепадала, а згодом відновлювалась.

A drawbridge used to be an entrance to the inner castle and played an important defensive role, since it could deter an invasion of enemies. If they busted into Nadbramna Tower, arrows and spears flew into them, including red-hot pitch and stones killing them. The attackers tried to escape and in a blue funk run to another bridge, getting trapped there. The bridge was spread with fat and the enemies, affected by mechanical device, flew down in a ditch with metal spears sticking out.

Хотинська фортеця височіє над рікою Дністер. Дістатись до внутрішнього замку можна було через підйомний міст, перекинутий через 6-метровий рів. Міст виконував важливу оборонну функцію: якщо ворог вдирався до однієї з веж, зверху на нього летіли стріли та списи, лилась розпечена смола, сипалось каміння. Здивовані таким «теплим» прийомом нападники, рятуючись від смерті, щодуху мчали на інший міст, де їх чекала чергова пастка: міст був намазаний жиром і під дією механічного пристрою провалювався. Ворог летів у рів, на дні якого стирчали металеві списи.

Khotyn Fortress is also famous due to the fact, an important battle between the Turks and the Ukrainian-Polish army was here in 1621. That is how Ottoman expansion was stopped and Europe was saved from Turkish domination. The battle led by great Ukrainian Hetman Petro Sahaidachnyi was won! The Turks used elephants to attack a Polish camp. Unable to withstand the pressure, the Poles began to flee. But Cossacks were skilful, they let the elephants to come to their camp as closer as possible keeping silence and suddenly created a great noise, which scared the elephants and they went back. Afterwards the Cossacks attacked a Turkish camp. This is how the Ukrainians and Poles defeated the 250 thousandth army of Sultan Osman II, who at that time controlled many European countries.

Хотинська фортеця прославилася і тим, що під її стінами у 1621 році відбулась важлива битва між турками та об’єднаним козацько-польським військом. Хотинська битва 1621 року зупинила османську експансію на захід і врятувала Європу від турецького панування. Битва була виграна! Блискавичні вміння проявив український гетьман Петро Сагайдачний. Українці і поляки перемогли величезну армію (240–300 тисяч воїнів) султана Османа II.

In 1673 another battle took place near Khotin, which at that time was Turkish, in which King Jan III Sobieski, together with the united Polish-Ukrainian-Moldovan army, defeated the army of the Turks.

У 1673 році відбулась ще одна битва під Хотином, який на той час був турецьким, в якій король Ян ІІІ Собеський разом з об'єднаним польсько-українсько-молдавським військом розбив армію турків.

But on this militant history of Khotyn Castle did not end, many bloody battles took place under its walls. In 1739 the troops of the Russian Empire received the Khotyn fortress.

Та на цьому войовнича історія Хотинського замку не завершилась, безліч кривавих битв проходили під його стінами. У 1739 році війська Російської імперії здобули Хотинську фортецю.

The castle is popular with filmmakers. Many famous movies were filmed in this fortress: "D'Artagnan and Three Musketeers", "Zahar Berkut", "Arrows of Robin Hood," "Viper," "An Old Fortress" and others.

Хотинська фортеця користується популярністю серед кінематографістів. Замок можна побачити у таких фільмах: «Захар Беркут», «Д’Артаньян і три мушкетери», «Тарас Бульба», «Стріли Робін Гуда», «Ясса», «Стара фортеця», «Балада про доблесного лицаря Айвенго» та інші.

P.S. In the Khotyn fortress in 2010-2011 the International Medieval Festival "Battle of Nations" was held. And since 2012, the organizers of the "Battle of Nations" annually held the festival "Medieval Khotin." Next time I'll show you photos and videos from the "Battle of Nations". У Хотинській фортеці у 2010– 2011 роках проводили міжнародний середньовічний фестиваль «Битва націй». А з 2012 року організаторами «Битви націй» щорічно проводиться фестиваль «Середньовічний Хотин».
