Washington D.C.
The White House
First stop on this particular day was to visit my old Uncle ‘Donald’. I think he was home as we were not allowed anywhere near the front fence of the building.
Smithsonian Air and Space Museum
One of the highlights of my visit to Washington D.C. was try visit to the Air and Space Museum to see all of the different artefacts that they have there. There were a few things I was looking forward to seeing but the number 1 on my list was the ‘Wright Flyer’. This is the place that the Wright Brothers famously took to the skies for 58 seconds to prove that a vehicle heavier than air could fly. The picture below is the original flyer that was built in 1903 and donated to the museum.
The second artefact I wanted to see was the capsule that John Glenn went into orbit in during the Gemini missions.
There are so many exciting aircraft and artefacts at the museum that every room I went into I felt like a little kid in a candy shop. The WWII section had a version of every fighter from the main axis and allied forces (excluding the Soviet Union) on display.
Smithsonian National Zoological Park
We also visited the National Zoo in Washington D.C., particularly to see the Giant Panda program there. It is strange to visit as there is no cost to enter, there are numerous entrances with no booths to pay at. So we pulled up at one of the car parks and just strolled on in.
There are a lot of different animals at the National Zoo and the Giant Panda program has been very successful at producing numerous baby cubs over the years. It was a great day and the kids loved looking for all of the animals.
Movies and that’s all folks
To finish our short, but action packed visit to Washington D.C. we headed to the movies to rest our weary legs. We watched the new animation ‘Coco’ but the best thing was the awesome electrically reclining seats at the cinema!
