Come with me - and see the skyline of Kuala Lumpur

in #travel6 years ago

Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia is a place with great skyline full of gleaming skyscrapers mixed with colonial architecture, and variety of natural attractions.

City is divided into numerous districts. Main hub, called the Golden Triangle, contains: Bukit Bintang, KLCC and Chinatown (another one we’ve visited during our trip). Walking through the city is super hard, the traffic is so bad and drivers don’t pay much attention to walkers. Green light, red light - whatever. That’s why most of the time we get around using taxis. We found this super helpful app - GRAB. It is similar to Uber but works better in Asian countries. The prices was super low so we could use it all the time.

This photo I took in our apartment, shows perfectly the contrast between poor districts and rich city center.

There is no person in this world who will not recognize KL’s number one landmark - Petronas Twin Towers - the world’s tallest twin skyscrapers.

“ As an internationally recognised landmark,
the PETRONAS Twin Towers symbolise the courage, ingenuity,
initiative, and determination, energy, confidence, optimism,
advancement and zest of a nation. ”

Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad
Former Prime Minister of Malaysia (1981-2003)

Islamic-inspired towers were once the tallest buildings in the world (until 2004 when Taipei's 101 was built, measuring 508 m tall). The 88-storey building, soaring to a height of 451.9 meteres, designed by Cesar Pelli & Associates, is Kuala Lumpur’s crown jewel. You will be impressed how majestic the towers look during the day, but they are even more dazzling by night. It is also a great viewpoint there. At 170 meters both towers joined at the 41st and 42nd floors (175m above street level) by a 58 metre-long, world's highest 2-storey Sky bridge.

Petronas Towers are located in big shopping mall - Suria KLCC. When you go out of it to the backyard, you will see impressive fountains. They may look great by daylight but wait till they start to dance and sing by night. It is an amazing show, starts around 8 pm everyday. Really worth seeing.

Menara KL

The 421m-high KL Tower is, at present, the world's fifth tallest structure (green lantern on next photo). Located atop the Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve construction is officially known as Menara KL. Little bit upstaged by Petronas Twin Towers but still remains an important architectural marker of the city. The viewing deck here is at least 100 meteres higher than the Petronas Skybridge.

Shopping

This city is a shopping paradise. You can choose between so many of enormously big malls, with frequent sales events throughout the year. Expansive ones like Pavilion KL and Suria KLCC are also among the biggest tourist attractions, hosting a wide range of upmarket labels from all over the world.

If you are not so much into shopping in malls, same as we aren’t, you may prefer super colorful Chinatown. The place is well-known bargain hunter’s paradise and it never sleeps! Deeply immersed in Oriental culture, heritage and history, representing perfectly Malaysia’s multihued multicultural background. As in every China Town on this planet, you can find here all sorts of stuff.

Thean Hou Temple

This imposing multistorey Chinese temple, dedicated to Thean Hou, was opened in 1989. Dedicated to to the Chinese sea goddess Mazu affords wonderful views over Kuala Lumpur. This syncretic temple with elements of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism serves as both: a house of worship and a functional space for events such as weddings. Now it is also a great tourist attraction, especially during Chinese festival times and the birthdays of the various temple gods.

You can get your Chinese horoscope here, with divination for your next year. You need to throw some wooden sticks in a bowl to get one of them. Each has a number. This number correspond to the numbers on a drawer. There is your prophecy hidden.

For great city views go to the temple's upper decks. Also here you can get close-up views of the mosaic dragons and phoenixes adorning the eaves.

Batu Caves

DSC_0433.jpg

Attraction located 11 km north of KL. You can easily and cheap get there by rail from KL Sentral. A 400 million-year old limestone hill comprising three major caves and a number of smaller ones, best known as the focal point of the annual Hindu festival of Thaipusam. Unfortunately we were there one week before this great celebration which attracts thousands of visitors who come to see the colorful spectacle.

100-year old temple incorporated within, features idols and statues erected inside the main caves and around it. The temple is considered as an important Hindu landmark.

And we were super stars there. Hindu guy ask me if he can take a photo with me. As you may see few more appeared in a meantime. They said, seeing a white woman is an amazing experience, so they want to share it with families in their country. Why not? It is nice to be popular :)

Cathedral Cave is the largest and most popular cavern. This impressive cave houses several Hindu shrines beneath its 100-meter-high arched ceiling.

At the foot of Batu Hill, there are two other cave temples – the Art Gallery Cave and Museum Cave – with numerous Hindu statues and paintings.
