Those stone steps lead up to the wall, where I assume somebody once kept watch.
The wall has the classic castley top - those openings are called embrasures, & the wall parts between the openings are called merlons. The walkway up there is the rampart.

What's the difference?
A fortress is a building designed to be defended, which means it was very hard for enemies to get inside. ... There is little difference between a fortress and a castle. Fortresses normally have thick stone walls, thicker but less tall than in castles so artillery cannot break them.
