Sauces and Saunas - Aussie differences from the U.S.S. Minnowprize!

in #travel7 years ago

@stitchybitch broadcasting once more from the helm of the U.S.S. Minnowprize with another segment of Aussie differences! This one is a bit of a miscellaneous post!

Carts have omnidirectional wheels.

I wish I could say that I remained composed when this simple brilliance was laid bare in front of me. That I didn't flail my arms like Kermit the frog while swearing.
... I cannot say these things.
When I witnessed people rolling carts sideways, backwards, and spinning them around with the slightest of ease, my tiny little mind exploded. I looked back on all the woeful years of struggling with American shopping carts that had trouble even going STRAIGHT. Meanwhile, people over here are wheeling theirs around in a manner that is reminiscent of ice skating.

There is barbeque sauce on every table.

Along with salt, pepper, and tomato sauce (way better than ketchup ever could be), you will find barbeque sauce. Doesn't matter what kind of fare you are eating, it will be there. Breakfast? It is usually already on it. Pho? Yep! Coffee shops even have them laying about. Every cupboard in every home I've been in has contained the two side by side, along with a set in the fridge. It seems that these condiments are the staple that absolutely can never run out no matter what.

And it is the best thing ever.

Nomnomnom...

Bathtubs are very uncommon.

Because of water restrictions in the land of INSANE HEAT, bathtubs are not something that you see very often. Unlike stateside where almost every single shower is a tub, almost every shower here is a flat bottom or wet room.

Speaking of bathrooms... why do you guys have heat lamps?!

About half of the privately owned bathrooms I have been in have a light, fan, and then HEAT switch. But... but why? Isn't the brutal sun enough?!

There are a LOT of safety measures for pedestrians.

After being here for a couple weeks, I feel like the US basically only gives us an occasional cross walk and a "good luck, kid". The amount of thought that has gone into the design and set up is astounding. For example, in a lot of places, there are poles to keep cars from running you down as you wait to cross or are on a corner walk. Another great example is refuge islands. In areas where cross walks are too far apart or it is a heavily populated residential area, there are areas marked in the middle where you can cross and wait in the median (surrounded by poles). It actually makes me warm and fuzzy to see.

As always thank you for reading and we hope you like what we brought to the blockchain today! Please leave your feedback in the comments! We love to hear it!! Stay tuned for some amazing and unreal things coming your way!
Much love, @stitchybitch & @sammosk <3

hilarious.. can I just add, redback spiders in the shower, brown snakes in the bin, / and or swamp pythons.. crocodiles in the storm drains, box jellies on the beach and huntsman spiders in your living room. and fruit bats (flying foxes) everywhere. It's a good thing I love nature. Oh I forgot, Kangaroo skin everywhere you go and misappropriated indigenous art.

ALL THE HORRORS!
And I DID notice the kangaroo pelts in many shops! I have become quite the fan of the roo jerky, though!
~stitchy

yeah I had a medium rare Roo steak recently. It was like VERY NICE LAMB indeed. They've been making dog food out of it for years. there's too many kanga's apparently, they breed like rabbits !

What??? Do 'ROOS Shed, Like a Snake? ;)

let's just say they're a bit prone to losing their skins here and there ! ;)

Very Nice, Stitches! :D
Keep old SAMMO In Line, OK??? ;)

Thank ya, @underground!
And no one can tame the Sammo! XD

Good stuff @sammosk! Thanks a lot for sharing this great post! I wish i could visit Australia one day! Upvoted and followed! (Please follow back and upvote if you feel to :) )Greetings from Spain! :)

Soon it will all become second nature to you. All the differences will just fade and what you have there becomes the norm. I love how you explain things, very funny. Congratulations on the move to Australia.

I have noticed that I have settled in rather nicely! The only thing that has been problematic is that the bugs here seem to really enjoy my flesh a little too much!
And I am so thrilled you like the way I explain things and find them amusing! <3

A lot of places here have showers over bath as well :D And the heat lamps are for winter. Because some of us turn into utter pansies at what passes for winter on this side of the planet, anything below 20 is freezing and requires heat lamps XD

American shopping trolleys don't have omnidirectional wheels?! :O I must let people know next time we're cursing one with a gammy wheel that wants to run off into the sunset.

goatsig

Ah! You have solved the mystery! I wish I had been here for winter so I could experience some Aussie cold! Since I come from Florida I imagine that I would be shivering along with everyone else and huddled under the lamp!
And they don't! It is terrible! I can never go back to our awful carts! D:;
