Road Trip To The New Hampshire White Mountains
Road Trip To The New Hampshire White Mountains
Last summer we were staying in Lee, New Hampshire, which is located close to the seacoast. The mountains of New Hampshire are about an hour's drive from the ocean and it's well worth the trip. Armed with my camera and my chocolate lab Ozzie, I headed up NH 16 for a short day trip to the White Mountains.
Our first stop was Lake Chocorua.
Mount Chocorua looms over the lake providing a picture perfect backdrop. The mountain was named for a Native American who died on the mountain. Various legends tell a story of how Chocorua met his fate. Some say that he took his own life while others say he was forced to jump. Like most legends facts are embellished with fancy.
There are several hiking trails that go to the top of Mount Chocorua. The hiker is rewarded with spectacular views of the surrounded area. Perhaps we'll try that another day.
Ozzie enjoying the scenery and the rest break.
Further up NH 16 we reach Conway, where we take a left onto the Kancamagus (The Kanc) Highway. The Kanc winds its way 30 miles through the White Mountain National Forest. There are many spots to hike, camp, picnic or just enjoy the amazing views.
Here we stop at The Rocky Gorge Scenic Area.
The Swift River carves its way through the granite rocks forming the gorge. A wooden foot bridge crosses the gorge a provides a great platform for photos.
In spite of the warning signs, the temptation to dive into the gorge on a hot summer's day is too great.

Just past the bridge, the trail leads to a small pond tucked away in the trees.

Further up the Kanc we stop at another scenic area. There are gorgeous mountain views to the north.

On the way back we stopped at Sabbaday Falls. This is a popular, easy hike to a scenic waterfall.
Leaving the parking area, there is a wide, tree lined trail to the falls.
View along the trail.
At the falls, the trail loops to allow a close up view of the falls.

It's time to head back. We left a lot more to do and see in the White Mountains. That's for another day!
On our way back a train crosses the road in front of us.

Oh, wow - thanks for the reminder that it's been far too long since hubby & I took the kids up North! I'm pretty sure we did some "hiking" (if you can call it that when the kidlets were all in single digits) at Sabbaday Falls many moons ago. Gorgeous area, and your shots do it justice!
Thanks Traci! I hadn't been there in at least 20 years myself.
Oh my word, you are really making me miss our traveling days! What gorgeous photos you have! I'm following and looking forward to seeing more of your posts! I'm really curious to hear more of your life story as well after reading your synopsis on the @steemitbloggers post today!
Thank you for your comments @byn! The White Mountains are a special place for me. I really missed them after moving to Florida in 1999. Going back last summer was an awesome experience. I plan on going back again this summer.
We traveled for a few years on a bus and spent a lot of time in the Smoky Mountains, but we never really spent time in New Hampshire. Your photos make me want to visit there, though!
I think that New Hampshire is still pretty much an under the radar tourist destination. There's no big mega resorts, but plenty of small intimate B&Bs. Hiking trails are well marked and maintained, but subtly blend into to the environment. There's lots of beauty to see there!
We tend to avoid tourist places like the plague anyway, so it sounds perfect to me! The hiking trails sound heavenly, too!
