Rhodos, the Sun island for a reason.

in #travel7 years ago

Rhodos is a small island which belongs to Greece. We were looking for a spot where we can enjoy the nature, the sun and the sea. After several options, we choose Rhodos because it have a beautiful medieval city centre.

Rhodos City

It is the principal city of Rhodos island which belongs to Greece. The ancient city centre is actualy one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe. In 1988 it ended on the UNESO World Heritage list. Where it belongs. The nice thing about Rhodos Town is the small ancient streets, the old buildings and the information that is still there about the ancient time. It is like you take a mini time travel jump back in time ( if you look only at the buildings ).

Almost every building is a tourist shop. Does that ruin the expierence there? Yes, a little bit. There are people from restaurants who try to pull you in, there are shops who try to pull you in and there are a LOT of tourist shops. If you can lookpast the shops, this is a must see city. The buildings look great, the story behind the city is amazing. It is like you live in that time.

Harbor city

Rhodos City is an harbor city. You can rent a boat, join a fishing boat or just enjoy the sea there. There are a lot of water activities you can do, one of them is go on a fishing trip, that is what we did. It is affordable and you get to eat the fish that you catch! Fun!

First you will get out of the harbor to a spot a little but of the city, but not that far, you are able to see the city and the beach. Then you get to start fishing! You will each get your own fishing rod and there are A LOT of fish in the sea. I had my rod down for less then a minute and already caught a fish. I think within 5 minutes, everybody on the boat had caught their first fish.

We went on other fishing trips in USA where we almost caught nothing. Luckily this is not the case in Rhodos where the sea if full of hungry fish, wiating for you to throw down some bait. After a good hour, hour and a half of fishing the owner of the boat will fire up the BBQ and will make the fish we caught! This is really cool!

They prepare the fish for everybody with some salade which you can eat then on the boat. The fish is so amazing that you almost won't get a bone in there. The crew of the boat is very nice, they will check every fish that you catch to see if it is not dangerous. There are some poison fish here. So be carefull!

What else to do?

There are a lot more fun things to do in Rhodos! It is handy to rent a car so you can drive around the island and do all the things Rhodos has to offer. There are some beautiful bays around there. We made a visit to Antony Quinn Bay, which is gorgeus. There is enough parking space so everybody who want to come, can enjoy the bay there.

You can rent a beach bed there, which is handy because it is really, REALLY, hot there if the sun is shining mid day.You get a parasol with the rental of the beds which I needed almost every minute haha! (I get a sun burn easily).
There is a restaurant so you can buy some food and drinks and use the toilet. The water is very clear, there is a small shop a little bit up the road where you can buy some goggles, which gives you a breath taking view under water. This is a recommended spot to go to!

Ancient sites?

There are numerous ancient sites. The biggest one and I think best place to visit is Kameiros. It is a big cuty which they dug up and you cna really see the city beeing there. It gives you an idea of how the city looked and how they lived in that time, which is great to see. I really enjoy this site. You get a little folder with information about Kameiros so you know what you see and what they used it for.

There are some old marble blocks where you still see the writing of that time in it. They kept it there and displayed it.

The place is warm, specially if you go there by day. There is no roof over your head and the sun is burning all day, every day there. The site is big but if you walk there for 45-60 minutes, you've seen it all and you can look for a spot to find the shade. but if you are into archeology, this is must see spot! Definitely worth a visit.

Any thing else?

Enjoy the food. Rhodos has a lot of good food to offer. I heard some people who we met there that they kept going to the same restaurant almost every night since the food was good. Then you will miss out on same great food. There are a lot of hidden gems or familiy restaurants which prepare the best food!

We went to a restaurant and asked for a traditional dessert, called galaktoboureko. Almost nobody sell it since not a lot of people know it and it has to be freshly made before you can serve it. We asked it a a familiy restaurant and the owner was suprised we knew the dessert. He was so suprised that he asked one of his employees to make it at home, just for us!
After we had some delicious main course, we got the galaktoboureko.

(If you are going there, the name of the restaurant is Platon Taverna, really good food!)

Overall I think Rhodos is a really good and nice place to visit. You can enjoy the sun and sea, go fishing on a boat, see some ancient towns and have a great dinner. Definitely going back there once!

If you are going to Rhodos or went to Rhodos, share your expierence below :)
