Visit the Azores #4: Adventure trip to the 300-inhabitants-island Corvo [EN/GER]

Day 1 on the flower island: After a nice breakfast with sandwiches, fresh biscuits and muesli, we received a message from Cecilia of passeios turísticos flores, which we had contacted the night before: A crossing to Corvo takes place today, we should be in Santa Cruz at 11 o'clock if we want to join. We don’t need much time to think about it but go straight to the little port.

When we arrive, the preparations are already in full swing

Cecilia and Cristino welcome us warmly at our arrival. A Portuguese couple and Jérome from Paris will accompany us. Everyone looks a bit excited. Jérome tries to flirt with pretty Cecilia in vain - then we get in the rubber dinghy and head off.

What at first looks like a perfect, peaceful crossing turns into an absolute adventure within minutes! Dark clouds rise and soon we don’t see much but mist. The sea is getting rough. While Cristino and his colleague steer the rubber dinghy quite relaxed (they are dressed in swim trunks and flip-flops!), we cling the armrests, wrapped in rain jackets. At first, we feel a bit uneasy. But both are pros and steer each wave perfectly - BOUM - BOUM- BOUM – that’s our ride over the rough waters.

After turbulent 90 minutes (usually the crossing takes half an hour) we arrive at Corvo. The Portuguese couple looks a bit worn-out, Jérome has cheered through the whole crossing and we are relieved and happy about this incredibly exciting adventure.
Due to the unstable weather we only have 2 hours on Corvo. So we all get on a small taxi and drive to Caldeirão do Corvo. When the weather is good, a hike from the port is recommended.

On the way back, the taxi driver takes us through the village with only 300 inhabitants, shows us the town hall, the school and the tiny landing strip. The *Vila do Corvo *is the only settlement on the 17 km² island.

We get back in the small rubber dinghy and set off for Flores. The return journey is much more relaxed and peaceful, Jérome keeps us in a good mood with his mix of French, Spanish (!) and English.
When the weather is fine, Cristino and his colleague pass the passengers past caves and look for dolphins. Even though we didn’t do that, our Corvo trip was unique and our first absolute highlight at the Azores!

Tag 1 auf der Blumeninsel: Nach ausgiebigem Frühstück mit Sandwiches, frischen Keksen und Müsli erreicht uns eine Nachricht von Cecilia der passeios turísticos flores, die wir noch am Vorabend kontaktiert hatten: Heute findet eine Überfahrt nach Corvo statt, wir sollten um 11 Uhr am Hafen in Santa Cruz sein. Wir überlegen nicht lange, sondern machen uns gleich auf den Weg zum Hafen.

Bei unserer Ankunft sind die Vorbereitungen schon in vollem Gange

Vor Ort begrüßen uns Cecilia und Cristino. Ein portugiesisches Pärchen und Jérome aus Paris sind mit von der Partie. Alle wirken etwas aufgeregt. Jérome versucht vergebens, mit der hübschen Cecilia zu flirten – dann steigen wir in das Schlauchboot und düsen los.

Start bei schönstem Sonnenschein

Was zu Beginn noch aussieht wie eine perfekte, ruhige Überfahrt verwandelt sich binnen Minuten in ein absolutes Abenteuer! Dunkle Wolken ziehen auf, bald sehen wir nicht mehr viel außer einer düsteren Nebelsuppe. Das Meer wird rauer. Während Cristino und sein Kollege entspannt (in Badehose und Flipflops!) das Boot lenken, klammern wir uns, in Regenjacken gehüllt, an den Armlehnen fest. So ganz geheuer ist uns das anfangs nicht! Die beiden haben das aber gut im Griff und steuern jede Welle gekonnt an – KRACH – KRACH – KRACH – so reiten wir über das raue Gewässer.

Nach turbulenten 90 Minuten (eigentlich dauert die Überfahrt eine halbe Stunde) kommen wir auf Corvo an. Das portugiesische Ehepaar sieht etwas mitgenommen aus, Jérome hat die ganze Fahrt über gejubelt und wir sind erleichtert und glücklich über das unglaublich aufregende Abenteuer.
Aufgrund des unbeständigen Wetters haben wir nur 2 Stunden Zeit auf Corvo. Wir steigen daher alle in ein kleines Taxi und werden zum Caldeirão do Corvo gefahren. Bei gutem Wetter empfiehlt sich eine Wanderung ab dem Hafen.
Der Blick auf den Krater ist beeindruckend, die Nebelschwaden schmälern allerdings unsere Euphorie.

Auf der Rückfahrt führt uns der Taxifahrer noch durch das Dorf mit 300 Einwohnern, zeigt uns das Rathaus, die Schule und die winzige Landebahn. Die Vila do Corvo ist die einzige Siedlung auf der 17 km² großen Insel.

Wir steigen zurück in das kleine Boot und brechen auf in Richtung Flores. Die Rückfahrt ist deutlich entspannter und ruhig, Jérome hält uns mit seinem Mix aus Französisch, Spanisch (!) und Englisch bei Laune.
Bei gutem Wetter führen Cristino und sein Kollege die Passagiere noch an Höhlen vorbei und halten Ausschau nach Delfinen. Auch wenn wir dies leider nicht gemacht haben, war unser Corvo-Trip einzigartig und unser erstes absolutes Highlight auf den Azoren!
