Sculpture: It's all Greek to Me...

This historic sculpture is located in the Museum of Cadiz which was created when the Provincial Museum of Archeology and the Provincial Museum of Fine Arts amalgamated in 1970.

It is a collection of pieces that I thought were particularlly interesting. I marvel at the level of detail that was captured, by the artists, in marble. It's mind-boggling that it has been able to weather the test of time, over the centuries.

 

This one was over 9 feet tall and had great musculature.

This one had been "censored" by the Catholic church at one point in its life span. As a result it is missing a "key Appendage".  Apparently this form of censorship was a common practice.

The drape of the fabric and the curve of the torso, brings this piece to life.

Very weathered but the striation in the marble is eye catching.

Fully robed and wearing shoes.

Heads that give you a sense for hairstyles of that time period.

The 3 friends.

His and Her, sarcophagi. (You know, for the couple who has everything.)

The Museum of Cadiz can be found at the Plaza de Mina, in Cadiz, Spain and is open daily. If you have European citizenship, admission is free. If you don't, it's very affordable at $1.50 Euros.
