Why I left Germany

I started my trip to Portugal at the first of February in Germany. Normally I’m a winter-person. I love the snow and the coldness much more than the heat. But since I live totally outside I feel that I’m getting more and more dependent on the weather. It’s not really the coldness outside. It’s more the sun I missed inn Germany and the grey sky made me a little bit sad.

Since I live 24/7 in my rooftop tent I’m as independent as I never was before. I asked myself on day in the end of January:

Why should I stay in this ugly conditions?

I had no answer to this question. After this I did it like many other full-time traveller, too: I started to travel to the sun when she is not at my place. On my way I had a lot of snow again at an unusual place. But that’s another story 😉.

Zuerst will ich euch mit auf den Weg nehmen, warum ich mich überhaupt auf den Weg gemacht habe ✌️. Am 1. Februar habe ich meine Portugalreise begonnen. Eigentlich bin ich ja grundlegend ein Winterkind. Je mehr Schnee umso besser und liber kalt als heiß. Aber seitdem ich draußen lebe bin ich mehr und mehr abhängig vom Wetter. Dabei ist es noch nicht einmal die Kälte, die mir zu schaffen macht. Viel mehr fehlt mir die Sonne und dieses triste Wetter macht mich ein bisschen betrübt.

Nun lebe ich ja in meinem Auto und Dachzelt. So unabhängig war ich noch nie zuvor. Also habe ich mir Ende Januar diese Frage gestellt:

Warum hälst du dich eigentlich in diesem bescheidenen Wetter auf?

Ich hatte keine plausible Antwort auf diese Frage. Also habe ich es daraufhin so gemacht, wie viele andere Vollzeit-Reisende es auch machen im Winter: Ab nach Süden und der Sonne entgegen. Auf meinem Weg hatte ich noch Unmengen an Schnee an den unüblichsten Plätzen. Aber das ist eine andere Geschichte 😉.

Portugal is the aim for this trip. But as it should ever be in life it’s the same for this route: the main goal during the travel is still „the way is the goal“! So I made no appointments on my way and had no restriction of time. What a nice feeling! I just feeded my navigation with „Portugal“ and started.

Für diese Reise ist das Ziel Portugal. Aber genauso wie es im Leben eigentlich immer sein sollte ist auch hier für mich das Hauptziel eher die Reise an sich. Streng nach dem Motto: „Der Weg ist das Ziel“. Ich habe mich auf dem Weg zu nichts verpflichtet und mir auch keine Zeitrestriktion gesetzt. Was für ein geiles Gefühl! Mein Navi nur noch mit dem stumpfen Ziel „Portugal“ gefüttert, und los =)

I feel so sorry to say this. But the most remaining impression from my first time in Switzerland is: expensive expensive expensive.

This country is well known for this. But it’s in the same way true. Even at Mc Donalds the coffee was as double expensive I am used to. And the worst thing for me as a would-be digital nomad: the internet costs were incredible. I spend more than 8€ a day for mobile Internet.

Unfortunately I had just foggy ans cold conditions while I was in Switzerland. I’m pretty sure the landscape and even the people are lovely. This is the second reason why I travelled a little bit faster through this small country than I thought before. Normally I’m really mountain-addicted and the mountains are a kind of magnetic to myself. In the end I was 10 days in the Switzerland and I haven’t seen a single mountain.

Maybe I should give this jewel another chance on my way back. Then I’ll doing a digital diet and just eating things I bought before in another country 😂 (by the way: This is how even many Swiss people do it. The country is a really small one, so many people live near to the boarder and can do their shopping in cheaper countries).

Es tut mir wirklich sehr Leid das sagen zu müssen. Aber am krassesten wird mir von meinem ersten Besuch der Schweiz in Erinnerung bleiben: teuer teuer teuer.

Dieses Land ist durchaus bekannt für die gehobenen Preise. Sogar bei Mc Donalds habe ich doppelt so viel für einen Kaffee bezahlt, als ich es normalerweise gewohnt bin. Und das schlimmste für mich als angehender digitaler Nomade: Ich habe mehr als 8€ pro Tag bezahlt für mobiles Internet. Das konnte ich kaum fassen.

Unglücklicherweise hatte ich obendrauf schlechtes Wetter. Ich bin mir mehr als sicher, dass Land und Leute in der Schweiz einen Besuch wert sind. Aber das war am Ende der zweite Grund, warum ich durch das kleine Land doch etwas schneller durchgereist bin, als ich es erwartet hätte. Normalerweise bin ich ja richtig vernarrt in die Berge und dieselben sind sogar wie ein Magnet für mich. Aber am Ende habe ich nach 10 Tagen Schweiz nicht einen einzigen Berg erblickt.

Vielleicht sollte ich diesem Juwel auf dem Rückweg noch eine Chance geben. Dann aber am besten mit einer Zeit digitaler Diät und Lebensmitteln aus dem angrenzenden Ausland 😂 (am Rande: so machen es im übrigen auch viele Schweizer. Da das Land sehr klein ist, leben viele nahe genug der Grenze um auch im angrenzenden Ausland günstiger einkaufen zu können).

But these negative impressions didn’t insist me on meeting to Swiss people I know from the Facebook-Community rooftop tent nomads. They saw me writing about my trip on my Facebook-page and invited me to a traditional meal at their camping lodge.

I couldn’t say no, because they offered me cheese fondue 😅 (that wasn’t the only reason). If you don’t know it you should try. Here is a random receipt. It’s a special kind of heated cheese and you dip pieces of bread inside. So easy but it was really delicious.

This evening will last more in my memories than everything else. Always remind: People are that what matter in life!

Diese negativen Aspekte haben mich natürlich nicht davon abgehalten mich mit ein paar Schweizer Bekannten zu treffen. Ich kenne sie aus der Facebook-Community Dachzeltnomaden. Sie haben auf meiner FB-Seite gelesen, dass ich auf meiner Route bei ihnen vorbei komme. Dann haben sie mich kurzerhand in ihre Ferienhütte auf einem Campingplatz eingeladen.

Ich konnte da nicht nein sagen, denn sie haben mir ganz traditionell auf Schweizer Art Käsefondue aufgetischt. Wenn du das noch nicht kennst, solltest du es mal probieren. Es ist ein spezieller Käse, der erhitzt wird. Dann tunkst du Brotstücke rein und geniesst die Sünde =). Hier ist ein beliebiges Rezept aus dem Netz, selbst habe ich leider noch keins gemacht. Vielleicht hat auch jemand Rezeptvorschläge in den Kommentaren? Es war ein so einfaches aber mega leckeres Abendessen.

Dieser Abend wird mir in Erinnerung bleiben (nicht nur wegen dem Essen) und zeigt mir wieder: Menschen sind im Leben das, was wirklich zählt!

I’ll come back when you can offer me your mountains and another (affordable) Cheese Fondue. I’m looking forward to a couple of amazing mountain tours and a lot of top-of-the-roof-experiences.
