"The Church of the dunes" - so translated from the Flemish sonorous name of the city of Dunkirk, one of the largest ports in France and, without a doubt, one of the most original cities in Europe.

The history of the city is closely connected with the events of the Second world war: in the first place Dunkirk is known as the site of the historic evacuation of the British troops in 1940, Later the German garrison turned the city into a fortress and defended until the end of the war. Dunkirk has been destroyed by almost three-quarters, so in terms of old buildings it is not too rich.

One of the main attractions of the city is a high, restored brick bell tower of the middle ages. It is the main reference point of Dunkirk. Nearby is the Church of St. Eloi, founded in the XV century. The Church is known for the fact that it is the tomb of the Corsair Jean Bar.
We didn't see much of the sights or the museums. Basically we spent time walking on the beach, breathing the sea air.

We built a port, barges went out to sea, little fishing boats came home with the catch.
