Visiting Poland! New year's eve in Poznan the city of “the two fighting goats”
Dear Steemit community today my post is regarding some days spent in Poznan Poland. That is not my first time here. In the past I spent one year exchange student programme Erasmus nine months. I came back to visit some friends of mine. We spent together the new year's eve 2017/18. Poznan does not have a flow of tourism like Krakow or Warsaw in Poland but it is still a beautiful city.
(The statue of the two fighting goats in Plac Kolegianski)
Why city of the fighting goat?
According to a legend some centuries ago in the town hall military force had banquet in the town hall. The cook has stolen two goats which they ran up from the town hall and began to butt to each others. It was so funny that they decide to organize a mechanism display in the town hall that represent this “fighting goat”above the clock. Nowadays it is the symbol of the city
(Behind me the town hall situated in Stary Rynek the square of old market)
Close to Plac Kolegianski and Stary Rynek I visited again the collegial Parish Church of St. Stanislaus (or Fara Church) a former Jesuit church built in baroque style. Its construction started around 1650. The building was modified and nowadays is one of the most beautiful Baroque style building in Poland.
(In świętosławska street behind me the impressive façade of Fara Church)
( Gołębia street going ahead you have Plac Kolegianski with the statue of two fighting goats and the other side the courtyard of the church)
Here some picture of the interior
Walking around Stary Rynek I took some other pictures
(Picture taken from the Royal Castle)
On the western part and close to Stary Rynek is situated the Royal Castle built in 13th century, destroyed during the Second World War and after that rebuilt. Nowaday is a museum of applied arts.
Very close to the Royal Castle is situated the church of St. Francis
Built around the 17th century another example of Baroque style in Poznan
Walking on the west from Stary Rynek we approach Plac Wolnosci (freedom square)
The most important city events including the new year's eve largest party are located here. Keep going in the same way we approach the imperial castle.
Actually it looks more a building than a castle just neo-Romanesque style. Built under German rule in 1910 nowadays are situated cinemas, art galleries, theatre, restaurant and pubs.
Very close to the imperial castle you find the main building of university of Poznan Adam Mickiewicz with its statue.
I just discoverd that in one year and half approximately will celebrate its 100th anniversary and in front of the entrance the countdown.
In the same square the statue of Adam Mickiewicz the famous Polish Poet and the two cross made of steel the biggest one mentions 1956 the year of the first rebellion against the Soviet Union.
Now I would show you the picture of the building where I used to live during my Erasmus period situated close the main building of university close to Rondo Kaponiera
It is still a dormitory for university students. It was renovated and it is close to all main buildings of university, the old town, the railstation and the main supermarket. Also the airport is very well connected from Rondo Kaponiera.
But I would coming back to center and keep going to show something else of that.
Not far from Stary Rynek in the corner between Strzelcka street and półwiejska street you have the bronze statue of a man with bicycle Stary Marych (Old Marych)
One of the most admired citizen who represent the typical Poznanian one.
If you proceed to półwiejska street you will find the Stary Browar (old brewery in Polish Language) nowadays it is a commercial centre with a food court, supermarket, bars, restaurant and one club.
If you proceed in the opposite sense you will go back to Stary Rynek through Szkolna on the way you will find the sign of the ancient wall.
If you keep going to stary rynek in its left side you have Brovaria if you love beer you I suggest to you to taste it in this brewery that actually it is also restaurant and hotel.
If you have chance I suggest to you to taste pierogi the typical Polish dumplings with meat or cabbage and mushrooms or also sweet version
Actually we ate pierogi in a "pierogarnia" situated in Wroclawska street ( the parallel street of Szkolna). I have already travelled through Poland I have never seen made in front of me in any "pierogarnia". Great experience!
After eating pierogi I walked again throgh Stary Rynek during the night
In addition I would suggest to you ( if you have time and if you like) to visit Ostrow Tumski the Cathedral of Poznan situated in the north east of the old centre. Lake Malta also in the north-east and the Cytadela park.
To conclude I show you a picture before taking off from Lawica airport of Poznan
Hope you like and visit it ! Thanks for your attention
I wish you again an happy and wonderful new year 2018
