Visiting Italy! Pavia an eloquent town between Roman remains, towers and churches
Hi Dear Steemit community,
Today I am going to talk about Pavia an Italian town on the northern bank of the river Po, 40 km far from Milan.
Founded more than two thousands years ago by Romans. It is situated on the left bank of the Ticino river to the green hills of OltrePo Pavese. Pavia has still its Romanesque design intact with its main square (Piazza della Vittoria). And his typical Roman structure “castrum” with street-meeting at 90-degrees angles.
A tourist arriving here will feel in a place that hasn't lost its roots in history, culture and faith. The atmosphere looks like when Pavia was the capital of the Lombard Kingdom (572-774).
Pavia is an artistic city where it is a pleasure to “immerge yourself” among its medieval streets and prestigious colonnaded courtyards when one may admire fine places of worship and stately symbol of civil power. Since 2006 Pavia is on the list the world heritage of Unesco.
Strolling in downtown and wandering along the routes which wind past its many churches. Letting one's gaze drift down its alleys paved with traditional pebble stones or peeking into its restored internal courtyards are the most fitting ways to discover the splendour of a past which still lives.
Coming to Pavia means also visit The Visconti Castle. Built between 1360 and 1365 by the Duke Galeazzo II Visconti. He was a member of the most important Italian noble dynasties during the Middle Ages. The House of Visconti ruled the area of Milan untill the half of 15th century and the building his residence. A beautiful example of Late Gothic Lombard architecture.
Nowadays the building is intact and houses the city museum and a large courtyard.
Visitors will be able to see different frescos and sculptures, Romanesque, Gothic, Reinassance and archeological sections.
Visiting Pavia is easily on foot. I walked from the castle through Piazza della Vittoria and saw some beautiful stands in this one of the main squares in Pavia.
These stands selling some food, beer, wine but the most interesting was the one selling “shaped”chocolate.
I was impressed by the shoes-shaped chocolate. Amazing isnt'it?
Pavia is a city with some interesting churches. Here the one of San Michele a masterpiece of Lombard Romanesque style.
It was built entirely in stone in 12th century with exceptional sculptural forms.
The church of Santa Maria Incoronata di Canapenova was founded in 1492 by a lay confraternity
And also some medieval towers
Now I show you another symbol of Pavia, the remains of a roman bridge reconstructed after the second world war.
The bridge was erected between 1352 and 1354 by two architects Giovanni da Ferrara and Jacopo da Cozzo in turn constructed above an older bridge from Roman times.
Piles of hewn stone blocks and still visible in the riverbed when the water level is low are the relics of the original bridge
Apart from these, the most important remains of the Roman era are preserved in the Archeological section of the Civic Museum of Visconti Castle.
Nowadays the covered bridge links with its five asymetrical arches the old town of Pavia with the opposite bank of river Ticino. It is made of concrete and brickwork. Despite minor changes this modern bridge replicates shape and characteristics of the medieval construction.
Hope you like and visit it!!
