Giant's CausewaysteemCreated with Sketch.

Hey guys. I just returned from a great vacation with my girlfriend Rachel. The destination was good ole' Ireland. It was my second time in Ireland. This time I switched things up and headed to Northern Ireland. One of my stops was Giant's Causeway, one of Northern Ireland's most famous attractions. 60 million years ago volcanic eruptions created near-perfect hexagon tubes of rocks stacked next to each other like puzzle pieces, or was it due to something else...

The old Irish legend involves two giants...Finn McCool (the Irish Giant) and The Scottish giant across the sea named Benandonner.

Finn McCool was an arrogant giant who believed that he was the biggest and toughest giant in all of the land. He was bragging to wife one day how tough he was, and she stated that it might be true, however, she heard that there was a giant across the sea named Benandonner who may be bigger than McCool himself. Finn McCool was enraged by this statement, so he made it his mission to prove that he was the largest giant and he decided to challenge Benandonner. He grabbed chunks of the Antrim coast and threw them into the sea creating the causeway. These rocks formed the path for Finn to follow to Scotland.

This turned out to be a bad idea. Benandonner was a massive giant, much larger than Finn McCool. Finn acted quickly and retreated back to Ireland. Benandonner caught word that another giant was looking to challenge him, so he used the causeway from Scotland and followed McCool back to Ireland. Finn McCool was saved by his quick thinking wife who acted quickly and disguised him as a baby. The angry Benandonner came to McCool's house, saw the baby and decided that if the child was that big, the daddy must be really huge. He had no choice but to flee back to Scotland ripping up the causeway as he went so the Finn McCool would not be able to follow him. What we are left with is the present day Giant's Causeway.

So there you have it. Which tale do you believe? Was Giant's Causeway created by Giants or was it due to volcanic eruptions 60 million years ago? I will leave that up to you to decide.

I highly recommend seeing Giant's Causeway for yourself. You can climb the rocks and hike the trails. The scenery is beautiful. However, I would dress in layers. The weather changes quickly in Northern Ireland at Giant's Causeway. One minute it is sunny and warm, the next it's raining with strong headwinds, and then it is sunny and warm again.

I want to believe it was caused by giant

Be they fairies, the "little people" or the Giants, the enchanted Emerald Isle exceeds itself in its raw beauty. Wherever you go, there you are, at the end and the beginning of the Earth.

So are those hexagonal rocks some ancient volcanic basalt that supposedly fractures in that form? Thanks for that; a veritable feast for the eyes and the mind's eye as well.

Looks like you guys had a great time , the Steem team missed you guys :)
