Australian Outback Sights – LAND TRAINS

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

The Australian outback offers many sights and sounds to marvel at, most of them provided by nature. However, there are also those human-made marvels. One such sight is Land Trains.

These mega long trucks mostly operate in the outback both on and off sealed public roads, which connect the major cities. These trucks mostly transport fuel, grain and livestock between cities.

Considering the distances between each city, especially between the Southern states and the northern and western states, it’s more cost-effective to run land trains than standard semi trucks. For example, the distance between Adelaide (South Australia) and Perth (Western Australia) is approximately 2,700km (1,700miles).

Due to obvious reasons, these trucks are not allowed in populated areas.

A standard prime mover (tractor) with the trailer connected to another articulated trailer is known as a B-double. Two articulation points is a B-triple. Most land trains are as long as 50 meters (164 feet). With a special permit, this can be stretched to 53.5 meters (175.5 feet). This is the maximum length allowed on public roads. However the outback also has many private roads (to cattle/sheep stations, mines, etc). On these roads, there is no limit on the length.

During my travels I have had the opportunity of seeing some of these gracious monsters (as I like to call them). Here are a few pictures taken when I stopped at a small outback town half way between Adelaide and Perth.

I could do that.
I hauled high, wide ,heavy...and LONG..sometimes almost THAT long.

That KW looked a lot like mine...I had more axels it has more fuel tanks.
same type of bumper.
Unfortunately the US is becoming more densely populated.
Driving big trucks isn't much fun anymore.

I guess 25 years was a good run..

Thanks for checking out my blog post.
25 years! you must have got to see the country quite a bit. One of my favourite shows is Ice Road Truckers.
Australia is still very sparsely populated and the distances between the major cities are enormous. So there is heaps of work for these trucks. Some of the roads can be as much as 100mile straights.
I did a brief video a few days back giving an idea of how vast and sparsely populated Aus is. Here is the link...
