My visit in Meteora, Greece

During my holidays in Greece I have visited Meteora, which is a rock formation hosting one of the largest and most precipitously built complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries. It was really an unearthly view. Monasteries that looked like they were growing straight from the rocks, perfectly blended with the landscape. In the past there were 24 of them, but only 6 survived until today.

A sad aspect of these beautiful monuments is that there is only 60 monks left (out of 300). In the past their intention was to be closer to God. Nowadays, thousands of tourists go through monasteries every day, which disturbs the peace of the monks. Due to that many of them left monasteries.

Anyway, it was marvellous to visit this heritage of the religious culture of Europe and see how hundreds of years ago people tried to achieve holiness.

How do you spend your holidays? Maybe you can share some memories with me? :)
