New York Adventure So Far

A few times a year I come to New York City to meet with current clients, to market my work, see tons of family, and as of last year, I now also make sure to see Steemit friends. This time I'm having an exceptionally enjoyable and fruitful trip and it mostly has to do with giving myself enough unplanned time.

the Queensborough Bridge in the view - my father wisely once said that one finial on this beautiful bridge has more design than most new apartment towers these days

Of course there are about 10 extra things I'd like to do every day in this city that never sleeps but I've finally learned - and it only took me 20 years - that the perfect formula is only 1 work thing, 1 social thing per day along with keeping up with misc communications relating to my studio back home. And equally important is to have my own space for at least most of the trip. This means no couch surfing nor staying where I don't have my own room....I'm far too much of an introvert to recharge unless I have some of my own time and space. Otherwise I am sick for a week when I come home and that's not worth it at all! Because of this plan, I'm having a lot of fun and feeling happy, focused and healthy.

I've made 2 presentations of my work at architectural firms so far. My aim is to show them a variety of my commission and production work so that they can call upon me when they have clients who want something special beyond what factories can produce.

So far, these presentations have gone well! Yes the reception has been very good but more than anything else, I'm rating the experience by how well I do as a presenter by my own measures. I decided before leaving that I wanted to improve my presentations and had a few new things to try. So far so good! I tried shifting my attitude - not sweating the details which wind up undermining my confidence. Instead I'm simply enjoying the experience of showing my work and meeting new people and this feels so much better and much less stressful.

Yesterday after a presentation -thus the suit- I met up with some Steemian friends which as always is a GREAT thing! These dear people are among my closest core group on this platform and I really enjoyed the in-person time more than I can say.

Each day I spend some time with family and here I am with my beloved niece: Photo taken by my sister and I think she added a little stardust ;-):

And of course Rob and facetime each day and here he is showing Lucy to me. We are all such a super close family unit and I always miss them terribly from the moment I leave.

Still more than half of my 9 day trip to go....more work, seeing lots of art, some friends and much more family!
Be well and I'll give you some more to see in a few days I hope. Thank you for your support, it's truly appreciated.

Looks like a whole lot of fun. NYC is such a great place to hang out. Only been there once to chase large beetles around the city for awhile. But it was a real trip. Meeting the fun and energetic New Yorker's. Have fun, and stay warm.

ok I've got to know more about this mission to chase large beetles around the city! sounds like a good story

It was a real fun story. Part of a five week job doing my part to rid NYC of the Asian Longhorn Beetle. A losing proposition last I heard.

I wrote a short (dds NOT short!) post about it quite awhile ago, but have wanted to expand it to encompass more of the small-time, major adventures I had while there. (Those simple, 'best times' of life). A many-part series to craft...when I can get to it. Unfortunately I don't have a lot of photos to go along. Hence, some very minor-league artwork is required. Which REALLY slows down the process.

It was truly a hoot while there, wandering the Big Apple and meeting the locals. We had a whole lot of fun together.

Well, that's probably about 4 paragraphs more on THAT subject than you wanted to wade through on a Friday AM, but seems to be a road I take now and then. Though it IS the 3rd Friday in February. So we've got that.

Here is the post, if you want to check it out. (I usually don't tag my stuff in other's posts/comments, unless they ask ( :
Love and Loss In NYC

New York is my happy place. Despite the distance I've been there two times, in total 5 weeks. There's such a bright atmosphere, great arts & culture, lovely people, a river (!) which I love, great parks... Literally, everything I love. Hope to see some more! Sunny pictures, rainy pictures... I'll take them all!

Enjoy!

definitely lots of fun! maybe sometime we will both be there at the same time and can meet in person!

Great post Ruth! So glad I can see it now that I'm back from the Galapagos and have internet that actually works! lol

I certainly see the family resemblance between you and your niece. I Love that photo of some typical New York dreary weather, though up-state it's often more dreary as I'm sure you know. But seeing and being around family is most important. The photo of you with the Sndbox gang fantastic! There is a slight chance I may be making my way to New York City in the spring. If so I'll certainly stop by shake Michael and Kirk by the hand. Great people they are.

Anway with functioning internet; I'll be around. Hope your trip is going well. -Dan

Dan, let me know in advance (if you can) when you're coming to NYC! I have to go again this spring and who knows, maybe our trips can overlap.

Absolutely! Right now it's up in the air if I go at all. I have to visit my dad in early May in Florida, then I plan to fly out to Europe from there......or I fly to New York and visit friends and family; then fly out to Europe from New York. So at the moment New York is kind of 50/50. I now have a bit more reason to go to New York as it would be great to see you and the Sndbox crew there. I'll certainly keep you posted! Have a great day!

So great to hang out with you all! Already looking forward to the next time :D

Glad to hear that your presentations went well! The wave ceramics look fantastic. If you're interested I'd be happy to connect you to my last office at Cooper Robertson (they do a lot of beautiful residential work) and are always looking for new designs to incorporate.

Really great to see you! Thank you for offering to link me with Cooper Robertson, I'd love that for my next trip! I'll ask you a few weeks beforehand and can get the ball rolling.

Such a fascinating, simple and cute story in your story. I was happy to read this post. Great trip, great photos. And I so understand this feature of"time for myself." I'm an introvert too, and it's important for me to have time alone with myself and private space. Good rest to you!

Coming from a small town it is always a bit of an adjustment. The city truly does not ever sleep!

big adjustment for me too....every time! but a fun one

It was wonderful meeting you face-to-face, Ruth! I’m sorry it was only an hour but we had such a wonderful discussion. I hope you enjoy the rest of your time in NYC. We’re on our way back home. We made it almost to the Ohio border our first day. Take care!

Yes far too short but rich none-the-less! Have a fun drive home, in fact you may be home by now. I look forward to more in person time again soon. I'll be back in NY again between now and June and with your work on Harkfork, who knows, maybe our time will coincide again.

Hi @natureofbeing -

What an exciting work trip! Hope you are having a great and productive time in the city. I totally missed meeting you guys. My cousin was visiting from Rhode Island the same day. I hope to meet you next time! Stay warm :D

Yes please next time :-)) thanks for the note!

Such a huge pleasure hanging out in person @natureofbeing! Can’t wait till the next time!!

I loved it and cheers to more in the future!

It was awesome seeing you @natureofbeing!!!!
