Learning can be fun! An educational trip with my son.
In honor of ancient city Troy's 20th anniversary of being chosen as a UNESCO world heritage, the year 2018 was recognized by the Ministry Of Culture and Tourism as 'year of Troy' in Turkey. We are looking forward to the events that will take place all year round. Leaving this side of the story aside, some works on this topic as project assignments have started at schools.
How to prepare a project assignment? What's the key to practically prove a theoretical knowledge?
To be honest, being a dad, despite thinking that theoretical education is necessary, I don't think that without application and observation, theoretical knowledge would be permanent and beneficial. And also it's not fun at all...
Moreover, a project assignment should not only give the kid a new information but it should also leave the kid some good memories.
And we gave up one of our weekends as son&father for this assignment for science, for history.
First mission: Watch a movie
Saturday, we sat down and watched the movie 'Troy'. Yes, it's just a movie! And what could it ever add something to a child?
Curiosity. Yes, first he needs to be curious about this, and Hollywood does a really good job on this.
2nd and most exciting mission: Visiting the antique city!
Afterwards, our desire to go to the ancient city ended up as a disappointment (it was closed due to maintenance work)... There's no giving up. If we can't get inside the antique city we might as well look at the battle of Troy from way above, like Zeus did.
Our route; The village, known as Adatepe today ( the region referred to as Gargaros in the Iliad epic). This village which is 100 km away from our house, located on the east coast of the Aegean sea, West side of the Mount Ida have been home to many varieties of nations throughout the history. (Troyan, Leleg, Mytilene, Persian, Athens, Rome, Seljuk, Ottoman)
It's an ideal place for a rest after a long trip. But we haven't reached the destination just yet. We have to go to the Altar of Zeus.
The Altar is 1 km away from the village, only accessible by foot. It's the place where sacrifices for the god of the gods Zeus were given. According to a rumor, Zeus watched the battle of Troy from this hill, he watched the ships of Early Greeks coming to shore.
Then, the goddess Hera and the god of sleep Hypnos put Zeus to sleep at that moment and gave Poseidon the chance to help the Greeks... I suppose it's the oldest version of Game Of Thrones.
Yes, talking about some movies and some mythology at this sight felt very nice. But our mission was not yet over. We will continue to travel for the assignment while we still have time.
I think I can make this sacrification for the sake of education. …

I've seen movie Troy before.
It is a nutritionally rich post.
I want to teach through brushes and cartoons.
It feels like a beautiful imagination exploding.

Teaching your own kid is one of the hardest things. It requires a lot of patience and more patience..
But if it's done with movie and field trip, it might be a different story. :)
absolutely one of the most difficult things @bree1042 but we have to find one easy way, it makes life more beautiful and easier for both children and parents
