Isla Mujeres, Mexico The Voyage Of The "Almost There"

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

The names of the people in the photos and this story have been changed to protect the innocent.

The premise was to leave at 10:00am Saturday from the marina located at Km 2.5 in the Hotel Zone in Cancun and arrive to Playa Norte, Isla Mujeres about 1 hour sailing on the caribbean.

It all started waking up from a drunken stupor. I promised myself I wasn't going to party which is why I started at 1:30 in the afternoon on Friday. Everything was Ok because I was in bed by 10pm. The last time I checked the time in was 12:30am.

I awoke at 8:15 and showered and chugged some water. It actually revived me, but it was a tremendous effort to get the captain's daughter to get out of bed. Like the creature Gollom she woke up and snarled and hissed for her precious.... coffee. I told her to drink water as well. Which she did thankfully. Told her to take a shower and after much whining about how she "just couldn't go on a boat trip"... she capitulated. She removed a beer from the fridge and we jumped in the car and headed to the marina.

Our illustrious Captain...we shall call him Captain Bligh was actually very generous and invited a friend of his Cristina and her family on a lovely ocean voyage to Isla Mujeres as a birthday gift to her. I was invited and offered to help in anyway that I could. I speak Spanish fluently and Waneto was grateful that I have some bit of intelligence. The sailor piloting was called Waneeto. That is not Captain Bligh.

Now Captain Bligh was originally piloting us out of the marina... I was dealing with mooring lines and have no pictures of how after pulling out of the marina we almost sailed right back in and crashed. I wouldn't even dare to call myself a novice sailor but I was glad that Waneto decided to mutiny and wrench the wheel from Captain Bligh and throw the motor in reverse. After that it was smooth sailing.

It was partly sunny for the entire trip with a very light wind. Waneeto and I had a convo and agreed that we would belay any order from Captain Bligh specifically if he wanted to raise the mainsail. He started to take the mainsail covering off but we stopped him from doing any serious damage. The voyage was wonderful and that ocean blue cannot be beat!

We sailed into Isla Mujeres and found a pier to tie off to. They only charged us 288.00MXN (mexican pesos) about 16.00USD and we could stay there as long we liked. Everyone disembarked and I headed to Playa Norte (North Beach) with the captain and his daughter.

Generally most boats just pull off shore... drop anchor and folks jump over board as it is shallow enough to wade to shore on the north side of the island.

We walked to a restaurant on the beach called Buos which means "owls" in Spanish. We were all extremely parched and were a bit put off that it took them 15 minutes just to take our drink order. But the view in my humble opinion was simply amazing as women from all over the world decided to dress in apparel resembling dental floss. Oh and just for your information massages & Yoga are also available on the menu.

We eventually made it back to the pier where we had moored when I just happened to spot the most famous sailor on Isla Mujeres. This pirate just does not give any fucks! Fortunately I snapped 2 pics before he made his escape.

We returned and with Waneeto and myself a bit more in sync docked the boat and hitched her tight to the pier. All in all it was a pretty awesome day. Everyone enjoyed themselves onboard and I was happy that no one was whistling the theme song to Giligan's Island. These next few days will be spent at birthday parties https://steemit.com/life/@mithrilweed/celebrating-in-cancun-mexico and I am currently in Playa Del Carmen Mexico one hour south of Cancun. There's tropical storm Franklin blowing about but nothing to worry about even though the satelite image looks scary.

I shall be spending the next 11 days as a much needed rest. On a sad note after yesterdays birthday celebration my crappy LG phone finally crapped out... after so many posts and pics it might be on its last legs. I sure hope not, I shall be taking it to a specialist tomorrow.

On to the next adventure.

Awww! Sorry about your LG phone. I hope you can recover the pics and videos on your Mexico trip. I watched your video, I'm not sure if the lady is topless on the side of the boat. Is she? Or is she not? "women from all over the world decided to dress in apparel resembling dental floss" haha! Lucky guy! I wish I can travel there next time. Cheers! :-D

This place looks awesome!
