The summer solstice has come and gone and it's now officially summer! When I think of light and refreshing summertime sips, the minty Mojito makes it to the top of my list. As it should! After the Margarita (which I introduced you to last week) and the Cosmopolitan, the Mojito is the third most ordered cocktail in North America.
When visiting Miami Beach after a long day of play in the sun and sand, I find there's no better way to beat the tropical heat than to sip and savor a tall, cool Mojito. Add to that a light breeze on a balmy night and some authentic Cuban fare... it really doesn't get any better!
This light rum libation may be one of Cuba's hottest exports. After all, the Mojito has gained notoriety as that sexy "gentleman’s drink" that both James Bond and Ernest Hemingway (allegedly) favored!
Despite its seemingly recent rise in popularity over the past twenty years, the Mojito and has been a hit since the 16th century. An El Draque anyone?
This sizzling scene in Die Another Day (2002) of bikini-clad actress Halle Berry (Jinx) sipping actor Pierce Brosnan's (James Bond) Mojito in Cuba was actually shot in Cadiz, Spain.
Many bartenders consider the Mojito to be a bane as it can be labor intensive. However, if you're willing to roll up your sleeves and get your muddling mojo on, you'll be sippin' sweet Mojitos in no time.
You'll only need five ingredients and lots of ice. And no, you don't need a fancy muddler. A wooden spoon will suffice. Here's my recipe for an easy-to-make, no thrills Mojito!
Easy Mojito Cocktail Recipe
Ingredients
One Serving
Dozen mint leaves
1 lime, halved, then quartered into wedges
2 tsps Demerara sugar (or simple syrup, to taste)
2 fl oz light rum
1 cup of ice
Club soda
Garnish with a lime wheel or wedge and a sprig of mint
