Switzerland - A Rare Food Post

in #travel6 years ago

Thanks for joining me in my adventures. This blog is dedicated to travels off the beaten path. You won't find my review of Disney World here, but you might just discover a new way to explore your world. If you're a fan of the road less traveled, I think you'll like what we have in store today.

Tomato Soup

One of the best parts about traveling is getting to experience the local cuisine. We only had two nights in Switzerland, so decided it was time for a treat. Our dinner reservations were for 6:30 pm, and we sure were hungry by the time dinner arrived. Meals are a leisurely affair in most of Europe, so our hunger didn't phase the server. We started by ordering the tomato soup. It arrived, a mere splash of tomato puree in a large porcelain dish, with a single crouton sandwich in the center. The sandwich was stuffed with a smear of creamy cheese, just enough to escape the sides. We immediately got to work on it - trying to remain civilized is difficult with food this great and hunger this large.

The Mains

We'd ordered a bottle of wine to enjoy while we waited on our mains, and they came in due course. Matthew ordered the Shrimp Scampi, a bowl stuffed to overflowing with al dente pasta, sauteed with artichoke, parsley, and the largest prawns ever to grace this dish. A hint of lemon coated each noodle, brightening the dish but not overpowering its savory flavor.

Matthew's mother ordered a Butternut Squash Ravioli, lightly sauteed in garlic and oil, then tossed with chives, red bell peppers, and pine nuts. Each ravioli was the perfect texture, firm to the bite, yet soft and smooth on the inside. The lightness of the oil allowed the flavors of the squash to shine through the pasta.

For my entree, I ordered the Pasta with Smoked Salmon and Arugula. It was an unassuming dish, with no herbs or spices to speak of, yet with each twirl of the pasta around my fork the flavors deepened and became more complex. The smokiness of the salmon provided a bass note for the pasta which lingered on my palette between bites and complimented the light sweetness of the wine. The slight bitterness of the arugula threatened to overpower the dish, but always held back, maintaining the perfect balance.

Against our better judgement, we ordered dessert, each of us getting decadent ice cream, but our food comas were already beginning to kick in and I forgot to take pictures. You'll have to take my word for it. It was worth rolling down the hallway afterward, full bellies groaning in protest.

Man oh man, this was gooooood stuff!

The food looked utterly delicious! The ravioli really got my attention! I love finding a place that knows not only how to present the dishes but how to bring out the best flavours in the food as well.

Oh yeah, it's a real art! I think that's the main reason restaurants are able to charge so much - it's the presentation. Home cooked food has great flavor, but we often skimp on making it look as good as it tastes.

That looks amazing. Its late here, but now I'm hungry! I love fresh food prepared in simple ways.

Thanks! It's definitely got some of the best food so far on the trip.

That butternut squash pasta looks amazing!!

It was quite delicious! They sure know how to do pasta. Maybe it's because they are so close to Italy?
