Chocolate Hills of Bohol Philippines

in #travel8 years ago

The Chocolate Hills in Bohol Philippines is probably the most famous tourist attraction in Bohol. They are in the Philippine Tourism Authority’s list of tourist destinations in the Philippines, they are also declared the country’s third National Geological Monument and proposed for inclusion in the UNESCOWorld Heritage list.

Whenever I look in Chocolate Hills it reminds me of the hill as a small child’s drawing. Most people who first saw the pictures of this landscape can hardly believe that these hills are not a man-made artifact. The Chocolate Hills appear to be seemingly endless when viewed atop the hill in Carmen town

The hills are not huge; the highest one barely reaches 120 meters in height. Even so, most hills are between 30 and 50 meters. The conical Chocolate hills are scattered within a fifty square kilometer area. What’s unique with these limestone chocolate hills is that they are only covered in grass and the cone shape is more or less common to all although differing in size.

The hills look chocolaty only during dry season when the grass withers and turns into brown and looks like giant chocolate kisses. Grass species found to thrive on the hills are Imperata cylindrical and Saccharum spontaneum and several Compositae and ferns. Trees grow on the base of the hills and are lush and verdant rings around the almost bare cone-shaped hills resulting in its awesome natural beauty.

However take into consideration that the hills cannot be climbed individually and there is only a viewing deck from where you can marvel at the scenery around. Up to this day, even geologist have not reached consensus on how the hills were formed. The most commonly accepted theory is that they are weathered formations of a kind of marine limestone on top of a impermeable layer of clay.

The locals believe of a legend says that the hills came into existence when two giants threw stone and sands at each other in a fight that lasted for days. When they were finally exhausted, they made friends and left the island but left behind the mess they made.
