Life At Sea #1: Inside A Cargo Ship's Engine Room [Exclusive Photos Of My Work Place]

As I have mentioned in my earlier posts, I am an engineer in merchant navy. Today I will show you some photos of my workplace - the engine room of a merchant ship.

The photos shown here are those of a container ship (a type of cargo ship). For those who don't have much idea, here's how a container ship looks:

From the rice on your plate to the mobile phones in your hand, these container ships are responsible for the transportation of almost everything that we use daily.

Working on ships is difficult with the extreme weather condition and the unfriendly working environment. A voyage can last from 1 day to 1 month. Irregular working hours and negligible social life are some of the main issues we face. However, it's not that sad. We get to travel to several countries and work with people from around the world. More about that in my future posts.

Without delay, let's take a look at some of the pics of the engine room of a cargo ship - the place where I work.

This is the top view of the massive main engine of my ship. Marine engines are huge in size and have very high power. The three smaller engines which are seen on the top are - auxiliary engines. More about them in future posts.

This is the control room from where monitoring of the engine room is done. That's the only place where there is AC. Engine room temperature can go up as high as 45 degree Celsius.

The engine rooms are also very big on cargo ships. My ship's engine room had three levels - G+2 . These are the stairs that are used to go from one level to another.

These are air bottles where compressed air is stored.

This is the lowest platform of engine room. You can see the crankcase of the main engine.

From the opposite side:

This is emergency generator:

This is steering gear, which helps is giving direction to the ship.

This is the boiler

Ship's workshop, where welding, grinding etc. jobs are carried out

Stores:

Some of the many pumps. The engine room is literally filled with many of those.

Lastly. The propeller shaft. This connects the propeller to the engine. Yup! It's long and huge.
