How To Spend Your Day In Jakarta : Witnessing Indonesian's Classic to Modern Puppet in Museum Wayang

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

As we finished from learning the origin of Jakarta, we were moving to the puppet museum which located on the left side of the Jakarta History Museum. I have always been a fan of folklores and puppetry, so this was a chance for me to see different kinds of puppet than the classic ones I normally see daily. And again, I would say Jakarta is perfect for tanning because you couldn't really feel how hot was it to be there but as soon as you're home you would be a perfect toast.

Long short story, we entered the building and paid 5000idr ticket for each. I would say it was really worth it especially if you travel with budget. Here is another tips to save on transportation, take the commuter line which cost you only 3000 idr for a single trip and a card for 10000idr. You can always top up if you want to visit other places and by the end of your trip, you can do a refund for your train ticket and you'll get your 10000 back. Now go figure how many zero in there but that's actually less than a dollar. Max and I keep having trouble with these number despite that I am a citizen, it still is difficult for me to comprehend since I am no fan of paying with cash.

We first was greeted with couple of classic puppet which is from Java region that normally tells a tale about Hindu mythology. Below is a picture of Wayang Kulit Purwa and this kind appears in the beginning of story, in a transition and the end of the story. It symbolizes as the world and usually reflects the whole concept of puppetry story.

As we were about to walk to another exhibition, we found a small garden with dutch transcripts on it. We sat down and enjoying the breeze while trying to read dutch with my limited understanding. It was a tiny garden filled with dutch scripts around it. Max took a chance to take pictures around the park and apparently that spot was preferred by the visitors as it has a perfect vintage vibe. and of course, it was good for the Instagram feeds. Thirty minutes left since we sat down and decided to move on.

The next thing we saw was a display of interaction between the locals and the settlers.

Honestly, these puppet looks scary and even when I was there, it gave me weird vibes to be inside the building. Perhaps, I've seen too much of horror movie involving dolls with spirits.

Then, we move on to see international puppet that was exciting because it was my first time seeing all of these puppets. Below is the puppet from the Great Britain.

Probably this is one of my favorite

Not to mention, we got to see famous Indonesian instruments, a gamelan set though I've seen one already and took a short course on how to play these instruments.

Well this caught my attention as well, a puppet about Yeshua which in local it was titled Wayang Wahyu. By default, puppet is a medium to spread religious gospels and this one is one of its example. In English, it's called as Revelation puppet. And the play source is based on the New and the Old testament. Mainly it is played in central java and yogyakarta because both places are well known for puppet shows.

The tour ended as I have seen these two huge dolls which in local called as Ondel-Ondel. This doll is often paired and serves as additional figure in folk performance in order to welcome guest of honor either in marriage or cultural festivals. Not to mention, this doll is an Icon of Jakarta. So yeah, Indonesia is definitely more than just beach paradise and beautiful smoothie bowl. It is indeed a paradise for location independent like myself, but perhaps let's not forget to learn about its history and have some taste of local culture which is very diverse. Last but not least, if you want to learn about multiculturalism, Indonesia has to be on your list.

Gunungan dalam wayang merupakanLambang kejayaan nusantara, dan semoga kita mengembalikan kejayaan dan kemakmuran Indonesia seperti dulu lagi nusantara berjaya

emang aslinya tinggal dimana sih ? penasaran hehehe

How can it be?

It seems like we wrote about puppets/ creepy dolls only hours apart, even though my post ( on dolls and creepy dolls in movies ) was quite different, haha!

The Dutch placate mainly tells about a Dutch church having been there and a cemetery, where the founders of Batavia and their family members were buried.

This piece reminds me of the wayang dolls in my grandparents house. They lived in Indonesia after World War II. Those puppet always intrigued me and I found them way less creepy than the plastic dolls ( you can buy in stores ) that we grew up with.

Wayang is a parody of life
