Winter in Jasper

image

Two years ago, my mom, husband @sevenstars and I took a day road trip to Jasper Alberta around November. We wanted to see how Jasper looks like in winter. We live in the province of BC and we are lucky enough that it only takes just four-hour drive to the world famous Jasper National Park which is the largest of Canada’s Rocky Mountain parks. We packed a lunch, and departed early in the morning.

First let us take a selfie

It wasn't snowing the first couple of hours and it was very cloudy but still the drive was amazing. See pictures below:👇

❄ Two hours later, the road became icy but it wasn't that bad. There was fresh snow on the ground, trees, everywhere. ❄

Mount Robson

As we were driving through, we could already see Mount Robson from afar. It is always one of the highlights of our trips if we are driving to Jasper. The peak of Mount Robson is tricky to view with it being the highest in all British Columbia. They say it is only visible 14 days each year. We already expected that we won't see the peak as it was too cloudy and snowy that day but still pretty.

We pulled over for pee break and of course to take pictures 📷

Amazing views and a must stop if your going or coming from Jasper.

Moose Lake

Another must see resting spot is Moose Lake. It is located just 14.5 miles from Mount Robson. It is very pretty here during summer. You can stop and have your lunch here while enjoying the view. We didn't pulled over but I just took a video of it while in the car.

Check it out:

The lake is stocked with Rainbow trout which makes for great fishing during summer or even winter.

As we drove on towards Jasper we passed by this beautiful lake that caught our attention just along the road as we getting closer to the border of Alberta.

As soon as we saw this lake, our jaws dropped and we knew we had to pull over right away. I'm glad we did because, it was so pretty. I loved how the water was so clear that we could see the reflection of the snow-capped mountain, trees, train and the sky. It was definitely worth the stop!

At the border

It was around 12 noon when we arrived at the border which is a perfect time to take a stroll around. We bought a day park pass and off we went to winterland.

From the border, we decided to head straight to Maligne Lake which is an hour and fifteen minutes from the town.
image

From Jasper, we took Highway No.16. The road basically follows the flow of the Athabasca River, a glacial river which has its origin in the Columbia Icefield.
image

We then took the turn-off onto Maligne Road and the scenery changed dramatically.
image

The broad plains made way for thick forests and as we drove along the foothills of the dramatic snow-capped mountains, we were treated to magnificent close-ups of the geology of the area. I took a lot of road pictures just to warn you guys. ✌

The road continues past gorgeous forests and stunning panoramas of the mountains.

While we were driving, the sun came through the trees and I took this picture of my ring.

Medicine lake

Along the way, is arguably one of the highlights of this drive and a must stop - Medicine Lake. This fascinating lake is subject of local Indian folklore due to a unique characteristic: it simply "vanishes". This lake depends on melted glacier water to fill up and it changes drastically with each season.

"During the summer, glacial melt waters flood the lake, sometimes overflowing it."
Wikipedia

Just to give you an idea what it looks like during summer, see the picture below:

Medicine Lake in winter

"In fall and winter the lake disappears, is drained by an underground river system becoming a mudflat with scattered pools of water connected by a stream." Wikipedia

Maligne Lake

We soon reached Maligne Lake and the views were simply phenomenal. We were wowed with the beauty of it. From the snow-capped peaks and glaciers, to the semi frozen water, it felt magical.

We hung out there for a while. Enjoying the magnificent view and appreciating nature but sadly we had to go home.

Heading Home

When we headed back, we saw a cute moose at the middle of the street hanging out.
image

We pulled over right away from a distance and waited for him to walk away. But ten minutes later, still no movement. My husband had to honk the horn and it made the moose walked to the side of the street and disappeared in the trees.

We then continued driving home.

The day ended with a beautiful sunset.

It was an amazing day trip and will go back again hopefully soon😊
