India - 3000km on a Richshaw filmed on a drone

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

Back in January 2015, I set off on another mission to drive 3000km up the West coast of India in a motorized rickshaw with 6 amigos. We raised £1000 for two charities for our adventure that contributed to saving the world via rainforest conservation and saving the people on it through water aid. It was an incredible journey and a fantastic way to see the incredibly diverse and beautiful country that is India. This was the first time I used a drone for filming and it gives you a whole new perspective.

The Charities

Charity Water

Every 19 seconds a mother looses her child to a water related illness, so by the time you have enjoyed watching an episode of Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones, 140 awesome little people have perished unnecessarily. It is easier doing nothing, but the fact that we can very easily save many lives means we want you to help, because people's lives are shit without the clean water we take for granted.

  • A non-profit organisation on a mission to bring clean and safe drinking water to every person on the planet.
  • Private donors fund their operating costs so 100% of your donations go straight to the field.
  • They prove every water project they build using photos and GPS coordinates on Google Maps.
  • They work with strong local partners on the ground to build and maintain water projects.

Cool Earth

We were helping save the world one rainforest at a time. Not because we’re tree hugging sandal weavers, but because the world would be shit without them.

Where would we get lost if we didn't have jungles?

What they do in a nutshell:

  • Form non-logging agreements
  • Build better incomes, better schools, better clinics
  • Do the same with the next village
  • Build a shield for the rainforest

How they do it:

  • They never have and never will buy land. Instead, they help the local communities take legal control of their forest.
  • By building better schools, better clinics and better incomes, they ensure rainforest protection goes hand in hand with better lives.
  • They focus our efforts on rainforest that is most at-risk and which would otherwise be destroyed within the next 18 months.
  • The protected forest forms a shield to make millions of acres of neighbouring forest inaccessible to loggers.
  • They promise that more than 90p in every £1 you donate will go straight to their projects.

THE ROLLING MECHANICAL TURD

The Rickshaw

A short trip in a Bajaj auto-rickshaw is enough to convince you that the rickshaw is barely fit for the purpose of a brief journey across town. It's only when you hit the open road or indeed off-road that the beauty of these vehicles becomes apparent.

Nothing of the design of these noisy tripods is with comfort, safety or reliability in mind. They put you right at the bottom of the Indian road hierarchy thus giving you perfect opportunity to see India from the gutter.

Possibly the least suitable vehicle on the planet for covering the entire subcontinent in two weeks. In other words; perfect.
