Travel Tips and Tricks, Saint Petersburg Russia

in #travel7 years ago

Russia is one of the hottest countries to visit at the moment, and the low ruble is making it a good bargain. So check out my tips below on how to enjoy your time in Russia's capital of cool before the summer months are over!

Palace Square

This is the epicentre of SPB and a great spot for taking in the sights as well as being where you can find the Hermitage the world's largest museum! Get to the museum early in the summer as the lines can take 2 or 3 hours sometimes!!

The Metro Stations

In your travels around this massive city you will likely need to take the metro once and a while, even if you prefer taxis the traffic can be such a mess sometimes that metro is the only practical way. Make sure to look up from the hustle and bustle once in a while and enjoy the architectural wonders which are the metro stations!

Kunstkamera

Ever wanted to see hundreds of jars of dead babies? Well now you have your chance! Visit Peter The Great's personal collection of weird stuff he collected from around the world. Pro-tip get there early !

Peterhof

Take the fast boat across the harbour (leaves from Palace Square) to this truly outstanding palace! A great place to walk for a few hours and enjoy the peace and luxury of Russia's imperial days.

Canals

Peter The Great wanted to make an Amsterdam of the North, and SPB's canal system is a key architectural feature of the city. Get on a guided tour of the canals. Tours usually last about an and leave often from different points along Nevsky Prospect. There are tours in English, but check ahead to confirm times, and remember that not all companies offer this service, but don't belive anyone who says that there are no tours in English, there are!!! Usual price is around 500 rubles

Cathedral of the Spilled Blood

An architectural masterpiece if ever there was one. Buy the ticket and go inside, you won't be disappointed!

Loft Etazhi

Looking for something a little more original and off the beaten path. Check out Loft Etazhi. It is a collaborative art space downtown where you can find cool cafés, unusual shops, and art exhibitions. Entry is FREE!!

Rubensteina and Doomskaya

Tired of sightseeing and just need a good drink. Yeah, Russia has got you covered on that front too!
Go to Doomskaya street for hedonistic craziness. It is generally younger and crazier, but has a great vibe.
Go to Rubensteina street for something a little more refined, but which still has a great scene.
Pro-tip check out Dom 7 jazz club by the Spilled Blood Cathedral.

Top Tips

  • only get licensed cabs through a phone service, avoid gypsy cabs!
  • don't be afraid to ask for discounts for tours, bring your student card!
  • drink a Kvas (something like beer soda), an awesome refresher in the summer, grandmas usually sell it out of a big tank
  • learn even a little bit of Russian (Preev-yet - hello, Spa-see-bah - thank you) it will go a long way!!!!
  • don't be afraid of winter! If you can't come in the summer then this is a city which was made for the winter and is an absolute delight to visit when the snow is falling

Wow your photos are absolutely amazing. It takes me back to our trip., especially the Hermitage. The rare works of art that they had were stunning. I had to laugh though, because our trip there was after hours and the guard was getting impatient for us to leave. Our guide stopped and turned to us and said some people are so rude. Our tour group had a good laugh over that.

Yeah, you can get that sometimes in Russia ! Glad you enjoyd the post

By the way, I really liked this site https://set-travel.com/en/ With it, I found suitable articles for myself with which I could still find the perfect option for where to go, it's really worth it.

Amazing post!!! following you back!

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
