🇮🇩 Visiting the Pura Taman Ayun, Bali, Indonesia

In this post I am going to talk about my visit to the Pura Taman Ayun (Beautiful Garden Temple) in Bali, Indonesia, that I made back in 2009.

The temple is located at the south of Bali. It was built in 1634 as a family temple by the Raja of Mengwi, to worship the deified ancestors of the Mengwi dynasty, as well as other important gods from other temples (1).

Taman Ayun means ‘beautiful garden’ in Balinese, and it was aptly given, because the temple features some beautiful lush gardens, as well as many water features such as ponds, fountains, and canals.

The temple is also featured in the Unesco World Heritage List; as part of the Cultural Landscape of Bali Province, and as a fine example of subak, a cooperative water management system, dating back to the 9th century. The subak reflects the philosophy of Tri Hita Karana, which brings together the realms of the spirit, the human world, and nature. (2).

As you can see from the pictures above, this is a really beautiful temple. Strolling around its gardens on a warm, sunny day was truly uplifting.

Although there are many shrines throughout the temple, the most important ones, a number of five, seven, nine and eleven tierd merus, are inside a walled courtyard, called Jaba Jero, delineated by a broad water canal.
