Impressions from Machu Picchu, Peru

in #travel8 years ago (edited)

Hello friends,

Today I will share with you more impressions from beautiful Machu Picchu in Peru, the 15th-century Inca citadel that people forgot and nature reclaimed. It laid unnoticed for centuries, covered in moss, until American historian Hiram Bingham stumbled across it in 1911, and brought it back to our attention.

The Temple of the Condor in Machu Picchu is a stunning example of Inca stonemasonry.

On the floor of the temple lies a rock carved in the shape of the condor's head and neck feathers. It is believed that the head of the condor was used as a sacrificial altar. A prison complex stands directly behind the temple, containing an underground maze of dungeons. Accused citizens would be shackled into the dungeons for up to 3 days for such sins as laziness, lust, or theft, and then executed (1).
